Fielding Estate 2007 Chardonnay Musque

There are certain wines that are just made for summer – and sometimes you find those wines in the dead of winter – this is one of those wines. I tasted this one during a late fall afternoon during Wrapped Up in the Valley (20 Valley’s pre-Christmas touring event) and as I sipped it on Fielding’s back patio during abnormally warm temperatures for late-November. I thought, “I wish I had found this mid-summer instead of right now.” A nose of pear, apple and tangerine that was thoroughly inviting...

Cave Spring Cellars 2008 Gewurztraminer Estate

Talk about a wine that delivers miles above its price point. This Gewurztraminer is a stunning example that sells for so little money it’ll make you head spin. The nose has the typical rose petal nuances and perfumed apple notes, but it’s on the palate that the wine truly shines. Spicy and sweet with an apple blossom spiciness, there’s also a fabulous acidity that keeps everything in check – balanced and truly delicious. Winery mainstay Bryan tells me that it was the extended hang time for t...

Mastronardi 2006 Chardonnay

Reviewed February 2010, as part of the sexy winemaker judging … For the white wine in the sexiest winemaker competition, Lyse Leblanc looked back at her catalogue and decided the 2006 Chardonnay best represented her white wine work … she could have taken an easier road with a fresher Chardonnay but she wanted to show the complexity of her wines as they age – and this one definitely shows some stuffing and its longevity. The nose is vanilla, butter and baked apple, while the palate has plenty of...

Legends Estates 2008 Diva Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc

This is one of the wines which finalist Serge Papineau submitted for the sexy winemaker competition. The nose is rich in honeydew melon and sweet pear, the palate proves even more inviting with loads of pear flavour backed by hints of melon and tangerine, there’s even some nice limeade on the finish. Smooth, easy drinking and a long, lovely, persistent finish that has you repeatedly coming back for more. This is going to be a great summer time wine, providing we get a summer in 2010. Price: ...

Lailey Vineyard 2008 Canadian Oak Chardonnay

Winemaker Derek Barnett has been using Canadian oak since his days at Southbrook, which makes him one of the most experienced winemakers currently using Canadian oak - he knows its intricacies and knows how to use it well, and it shows. This Chardonnay has got so much going for it on both the nose and palate. First, the nose, caramel, toffee, butter, delicate white fruits, peaches and pears. The palate has nice follow through (look up at the nose) with a medium length finish that's both cream...
