Cattail Creek 2008 Select Late Harvest Meritage
Here’s a different kind of sweetie that is rarely seen – a blend. Usually, icewine and/or late harvest wines are made up from one single varietal: Riesling, Vidal, Cabernet Franc, etc, but this one has three reds mixed up in it: Cabernet Franc (50%), Merlot (30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%). The smells are sweet ripe and sugared red berries and cherries, while the taste delivers the sweet cherry, strawberry and hits of raspberry to the palate. The balance between sugar and acidity will have...

Strewn 2008 Select Late Harvest Cabernet
I love late harvest wines more than I like icewine; I’m not sure, but I think it has something to do with the price and the sweetness level. Recently, late harvest wines have been getting a bad rap as de-classified icewine; though many wineries are now specifically making late harvest wines, which means they are purposely waiting later into the season to harvest, but not necessarily awaiting the icewine freeze. This delightful pseudo-sweetie, only a 6 on the sugar code, has rich, inviting smel...

Ridgepoint 2008 Late Harvest Cabernet Sauvignon
I’m a big fan of late harvest wines, so I was excited to pop the cork on this one, so excited in fact I decided to pop it open before dinner, as aperitif. What I got did not disappoint. The nose was loaded with rhubarb and strawberry, while the palate delivered on the promise of the nose: a mouth-filling rhubarb and strawberry pie with a nice lengthy tart finish that washed the mouth clean readying it for the next taste, yet lingered long enough to allow that craving to build. With each sip I...

Chateau des Charmes 2007 Late Harvest Riesling
This sweetie delivers on both the nose and the palate: peach, sweet pear, mac apple and a slight petrol note. That petrol will be full throttle in the next 3-4 years, so I recommend drinking it sooner than later, and why not it's incredibly enjoyable right now. Price: $21.95 / 375ml - Rating: ****1/2 ...

Stratus 2008 Red Icewine
Stratus uses a blend of their red grapes to create this icewine, and the blend changes every year, but if you consider the grapes they grow includes Gamay, Syrah, Malbec, Petit Verdot as well as the Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc and Merlot, you have a good idea about what might be going into this wine. This year’s version is ripe with cherries and strawberries, honeyed sweetness and good acidity on the finish, which helps it to avoid any kind of cloying or sticky feel on the tongue. Price: $39...
