Description
Fielding made their name with Riesling under a different winemaker who is known for making some really good whites, with Ray Cornell taking over the reigns, the real question was, would their whites, namely the flagship Rieslings, suffer? I am happy to report, not at all, in fact they show the kind of innovation and difference in style that their previous vintages did not. The difference between the Reserve and Semi-Dry is like night and day; the semi-dry is a two on the sugar code and has the typical characteristics of sweet Riesling while the Reserve shows more style and finesse. Ray late harvested the Reserve grapes on November 1st (latest in Niagara for a non-sweet wine) allowing the grapes to fully mature and develop a touch of botrytis. The nose is sweet fruit: peaches, mangos and apples while the flavours are racy and citrusy with bracing, mouthwatering acidity and dry (0). What a difference and what a pleasant surprise. The debate over a favourite Riesling will rage on but what a choice to have to make.
