DescriptionDescription  I’m always on the lookout for stellar wines. Wines that make you stand up and take notice … they make you say, wow! … and they make you think: how’d they do that? To me, that’s a stellar wine. Of course, to get the real “wow!” the wine has to justify it’s price point. Waupoos Winery, I’m sorry to say, has never been known for any stellar wine. In fact, most people I spoke to about this winery, give them a passing shrug when they are mentioned. You’d think for one of the longest running wineries in the area, they’d have learned how to make a stellar bottle or two that would get people talking. On the flip side, over their years they have learned what pleases their patrons (because each time I have visited they have been very busy). Their customers want wines at a good price that are ready to drink now; and that’s exactly what they give them. This Riesling is friendly, easy drinking, smooth, and fits perfectly into what Waupoos is striving for. Fruit and floral greet the nose, with some apple, lime, honey and lilac. In the mouth, you’ll find the low acidity enhances the smoothness and sweetness, giving way to hints of citric-tartness at the end and providing a long lingering finish – where there’s macintosh apple and lemonade flavours. When all is said and done, your eyebrows might raise and you just might smile a bit, but there’s nothing shocking enough to make you say “wow” about this wine. It’s a people pleaser, but that’s it, that’s all.
