Chateau des Charmes 2006 Estate Sauvignon Blanc

Author :Michael Pinkus - Grape Guy
DescriptionDescription  Is this a screwcap I see before me … an odd little take on Shakespeare, but very apropos because this type of closure is definitely an oddity at the Chateau. I venture to guess this is their first commercial VQA-screwcap wine – and I can see why. The Kiwis made Sauvignon Blanc famous and fashionable and brought the screwcap to the fore while doing it (99% are under Stelvin closures). The Chateau invokes a little New Zealand in this bottle, while still keeping it Ontario – and not just with the closure. The smell is grassy (very N.Z) with a touch of honey and melon. The mouth is more Kiwi-driven – bit on the grassy side with citrus in the form of grapefruit rind on the finish; tart, almost to the point of bitterness … but the melon middle keeps everything in check. Very nice and summer-like. Price: $15.95
