Erie Shore Vineyard 2006 Summer Sun
Simple doesn’t have to be boring … that rule should also apply to the pinks you drink; choosing the right one can be difficult – I’m here to help. Erie Shore’s Summer Sun is probably one of their most popular wines, and that can be attributed to three things its great pink colour, its luscious summertime-in-a-bottle taste, and its reasonable price for such a simple yet elegant sipper. The nose is loaded with strawberry and cotton candy, but the mouth is not that sweet with raspberry, strawberr...

Erie Shore Vineyard 2003 Vidal
This is another great little semi-sweetie that tastes sweeter than it actually is. This vidal has the saving grace of having great citrus tones which pull it back from the edge of being overly sweet. Great citrus and floral nose, mild citrus on the palate along with apple, Bartlett pear, kiwi and a pleasant medium-long finish that lingers just long enough until you take your next sip. A fine patio sipper that allows you to while away the hours during the peaceful late summer and early fall. ...

Dan Aykroyd 2005 Cabernet-Merlot
Now this is more like what I was expecting from a man who claims to love Bordeaux (“I like the big, bold monster Bordeauxs …” Dan Aykroyd). This blend is 45% Franc, 25% Sauv and 35% Merlot from the hot 2005 vintage; 13 months in French and American oak have given this wine some real heft. Currently, the nose is spicy oak and cedar with some leatheriness and herbaceous undertones. The taste is dark fruits and oak dominated, but should smooth out and start showing more fruit over the coming yea...

Thirty Bench Wine Makers 2005 Cabernet Franc
It’s only a matter of time before Ontario winemakers start to really pay attention to what this grape is telling them – if you lean in real close you can actually hear them whispering, “I’m your grape.” Name any other grape and I’ll give you the country that is most recognized for it … but Cabernet Franc is a homeless wanderer – until now. Ontario winemakers should be focusing on this grape as our signature red wine. This Thirty Bench is a perfect example of what can be done with Franc here: ...

Thirty Bench Winemakers 2006 Riesling
The 2005 Thirty Bench Riesling became a model for all to follow – a blend of Riesling grapes from 3 of their vineyards. Then Thirty Bench made more expensive and more expressive single vineyard Rieslings using the best grapes plucked from those vineyards. I’m not surprised to see them do the same thing this year, because it proved to be wildly popular, not just with Riesling drinkers, but with all wine drinkers because it gave them a something-for-everybody selection. This ’06 is another tast...

Erie Shore Vineyard 2005 Duet
Erie Shore Vineyards continues to impress me with their wonderful wines and great hospitality – I always walk out of their small wine boutique feeling like one of the family, and with the slightly pleasurable, yet guilty notion that I have tasted a secret family recipe. The Duet this year is a little different than previous year’s releases. This time, it’s a two-thirds/one-third blend of Zweigelt to Cabernet Franc, (it is usually the other way around). This is mainly due to the great abundanc...

Erie Shore Vineyard 2005 Riesling
Most Rieslings have a delicious sameness about them – you have your apple, pear and petrol, maybe some floral and citrus notes, and then a wonderfully delicious sweetishness on the palate. So when something comes along that’s uniquely it’s own, you really stand up and take notice. This ’05 from the Lake Erie North Shore regions shows some difference on the nose that makes it quite unique – pink grapefruit cocktail – there’s absolutely no mistaking it … especially for a grapefruit fan like myse...

Featherstone Estate Winery & Vineyard 2006 Old Vines Riesling
Did someone say sixteen bucks for an old vines Riesling? Better be snapping that one up quick before they realize they’ve made a pricing error. This is the first time Featherstone has separated the Riesling from their vineyard into age designation. Dave Johnson has created an elegant and finesse-laden Riesling from some of the oldest vines in Niagara, rivaling those from both Vineland and Cave Springs for the title (30 years). He still keeps a dollop of sweetness (1) and by all rights this w...

Erie Shore Vineyard 2005 Cabernet
There is a something very different about Cabernet Francs from the Lake Erie North Shore area versus those from Niagara. Niagara Franc has the green pepper factor (which I like) while Lake Erie seems to have more dark fruit characteristics minus the vegetal notes ... this is another perfect example of that difference. With little oaking (1 month) the fruit really comes through – though the palate stills shows signs of it’s American oak home. Deep dark berries on the nose, like black cherries...

Fielding Estate Winery 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon
My number one selection from the April 2007 open house of new releases. Sure springtime is all about whites but this Cab Sauv almost talked to me from the glass, begging me to jump right in. Barrel fermented and then aged for 12 months in French oak, the nose shows signs of where it has come from and where it is going. Some toastyness and hits of sweet tobacco are from the barrel, but what is really exciting for your olfactory lobes is the strawberry, raspberry, cherry, blackberry, cassis and...
