Fielding Estate 2006 Red Conception

A blend of Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Aglianico … yep, the grape usually found in Italy has made its way to Ontario, aided by some adventurous grower. The nose is peppery, black fruited and red berried. The taste is soft and cedary at first, but develops herbs, cinnamon, white pepper, sour cherry and red currants as it opens up – the finish is lengthy and quite herby. Kudos to Fielding for giving this grape a chance and finding a blend that works. Price: $18.00...

Not to be confused with the “natural fermentation” Merlot (priced at $40), this Merlot abound with cherries and dark chocolate on the nose. Currently, it’s a wee bit tight in the mouth, but with a little aeration and/or some decanting, you can definitely see where this one is going to end up. Cassis and blackberries kick things off in the mouth, giving a very juicy mouth-filling performance; there’s also a pocketful of tannins that accost the tongue before things turn all red fruit and sweet o...

Cattail Creek 2006 Cabernet Merlot Reserve

Cattail has been opened since September of 2007. Their ‘06s have been on the shelf since they opened and the ‘07s will soon be arriving – but what is also finding its way onto their shelves is the reserve wines from 2006 – namely their Cabernet/Merlot blend (71% Cabernet Franc, 29% Merlot) which spent 14 months in French and American oak. Smells include vanilla-oak, coffee, and a red berry mix of strawberries and raspberries. The taste adds a little more to this roster, starting with the smoo...
