Tawse Winery 2006 Pinot Noir

The grapes for this wine come from 5 different vineyards. You’re probably wondering – if you’re a fan of Tawse Pinot – why they didn’t make vineyard specific Pinot this year, the answer my friend is simple: although 2006 was a great growing season it was a very wet harvest and once the grapes made it inside the winery they were indistinguishable one batch to the next, so instead of faking it Tawse put’em all together, lowered the price and created a single Pinot from the 2006 vintage. And I t...

Megalomaniac 2006 Vainglorious Cabernet/Merlot

This is a lovely effort from the John Howard Cellars of Distinction, owner of the Megalomaniac brand. The nose is black fruit, dark chocolate, herbs and vanilla – the flavours follow through from the nose in a very smooth and tasty way … my notes say “black velvet across the tongue” – but the taste is far superior to licking a piece of clothe, trust me....

Megalomaniac 2006 Bravado Cabernet Sauvignon

The plan, according to John Howard (owner of the Megalomaniac brand), is to make wine that tops out, price-wise, at $24.95, “because good Ontario wines should not be anymore than that” (at this time). This Cab Sauv is like chewing a stick of Big Red, not just for the cinnamon flavours that come through but also for the big red (and black) fruits that come out on both the nose and taste. There’s little in the way of oak influence here – meaning woodsy smells or flavours – but there is a fair a...

Mike Weir 2006 Pinot Noir

Typical cool climate Pinot Noir from Ontario – but saying typical doesn’t mean it’s boring or ordinary – typical means its good clean and pleasant to sip upon. The nose is earthy with cranberry and strawberry fruit … the taste follows right along with the nose along with good cutting acidity, ripe tannins and a wonderful sour cherry finish … set for release in June, but put this one aside till Thanksgiving – for either the Canadian or American version....

Daniel Lenko Estate 2005 Meritage

Lenko has never before submitted wines to the LCBO, so for his first entry, he has sent his ’05 Meritage blend (83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot) ... This one's meaty and mouth drying, built for the long haul of ten to twelve years (though it will be drinking very well at seven to eight years of age). The nose is quite spicy and peppery which follows through in the mouth with its heavy wood tannin structure, over time, the fruit will emerge to prominence, for now, it lies in waiting in the ba...
