Daniel Lenko Estate 2005 Old Vine Merlot

Lenko’s second LCBO-bound wine is also from the 2005 vintage (following the ’05 Meritage). This one has quite a bit more fruit (at this time) than its Meritage counterpart. Although it spent eighteen months in French and American oak, the wood used was mostly preconditions (read: used) oak, thus keeping the fruit to oakiness ratio in better balance. The smells are distinctively black cherry, blackberry and cocoa, while in the mouth, there are ripe tannins that wrap up dark berries, cinnamon, ...

FrogPond Farm 2002 Cabernet/Merlot

First, the Pond impressed me with their 9th place finish at the OntarioWineReview Cabernet Franc Challenge (Regular Franc category) … and that was out of 32 wines from all over Ontario. Now comes the ’02 Cab/Merlot into Vintages – and what a treat. Gamy and leathery on the nose, which almost put me off, but in the mouth it was something altogether different. Sweet herbs, black fruit and sweet spice, culminate in a sour cherry finish – it’s enjoyable right now with burgers or pizza....

Black Prince Winery 2006 Reserve Cabernet Franc

This wine placed seventh overall in the OntarioWineReview Cabernet Franc Challenge (Reserve category) – up against some pretty stiff competition, I was very impressive by the outcome for this County winery. Now to be honest these aren’t just county grapes, some of them do come from Niagara to help optimize what the county is growing, but the winemaking is all Prince Edward County. There’s a steady seam of cherry throughout this tasty little offering, with a bit of anise on the smooth finish....

Henry of Pelham 2006 Cabernet Franc Icewine

This is an icewine I’d love to spread on toast if I could … it has such a beautiful red berry nose – strawberry and raspberry mixed with rhubarb … in the mouth the raspberries take over, then it turns all strawberry jam-like on the finish. Wow, delicious. This wine placed 4th in the OntarioWineReview Cabernet Franc Challenge (Icewine/Late Harvest category)....

Reif Estate 2006 Merlot Reserve

To me Reif is a hit and miss winery … when they hit they are so close to the bull’s eye it’s scary and it makes me wonder how on earth their stuff misses. Case in point: their line of 2002 First Growth wines are exemplary (Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvigon) – then there is their 2006 Cabernet Franc – misfire, smells like citrus??? This Merlot is another hit … tons of blackberries, cinnamon and pencil shavings on the nose; in the mouth it’s striking: juicy blackberries, smooth oaky-vanill...
