Coyote’s Run 2006 Black Paw Pinot Noir

The Red Paw came out before Christmas and now here comes it’s brother, the Black Paw – it’s not that one got better, or more special treatment than the other, they just ran out of time to bottle – so the Black Paw sat, waiting and bided its time. The nose is very black cherry with traditional earthy character … the mouth is fruitier than it’s red counterpart with a lighter earthy quality – making this one the more fruit forward of the two. You may be wondering why the difference in price, $24 ...

Calamus Estate Winery 2006 Red

The 2005 Red was a delicious bargain at $15; now comes the next edition to the Calamus legacy … it might have been a few dollars more than its predecessor, but Calamus decided to stick with their pricing from last Vintage. The ’06 is a silky affair – 57% Cabernet Sauvignon; 29% Cabernet Franc and 14% Merlot, which spent 7 months in its oak home. Anise, black raspberry and red currants greet the nose, while red plums, white pepper, some spice and vanilla round out the palate. Classy and tasty....

Creekside Estate 2004 Reserve Meritage

This Meritage from ’04 foregoes the Cabernet Franc and instead relies on 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. Not only that, but almost 2 years (23 months) of barrel age has added some punch and ageability to the wine. It has a beautiful nose, which is rich and robust with blackberries and vanilla leading the way at this time. The mouth kicks it into gear relying mainly on those robust tannins from the barrel, you’ll find at present cinnamon is the spice of choice and blackberry to be the f...

Hillebrand Winery 2005 Artist Series Meritage

The Artist series of wines from Hillebrand is an interesting concept, not unique by any stretch of the imagination, it is something championed by Chateau Mouton Rothschld and their famous artists who have designed labels for them over the years; but Hillebrand takes a different approach, they request submissions from artists all over Ontario and pick the best for their ‘artist series’ labels – a number of varietal wines, each with a different picture. Well, the “Still Standing” by Ashley J. Mye...

Hernder Estate 2004 Merlot

You don’t usually see a wine that has won double gold at the same awards – and when I say “double gold” I mean two years in a row (Cuvee 2007 and 2008) … an even more fascinating fact is that the actual winemaker was not around to receive the award either time (in 2007 he was with Fiedling and 2008 with Stoney Ridge). Ray Cornell, the maker of this beauty, claims that it is the best Merlot he ever made at Hernder – and quite possible the best wine he has ever made there period (a reign that las...
