	John Howard Cellars ... Megalomaniac 2004 SonofaBitch Pinot Noir Pinot Noir is known as the heartbreak grape and I’m sure has made more than one winemaker scream “Son of a Bitch” more than a few times while making it. This SonofaBitch is really very good – a nose lifted straight out of a cherry tree with hints of strawberries and a slight woodsiness. The palate is something altogether different, sure the woodsy comes through with cedar, oak and even redwood notes (could be the mix of red fruit and oak), the fruit is tart strawberry, sour cherry and unsweete... 	Thirty Bench Wine Makers 2005 Cabernet Franc It’s only a matter of time before Ontario winemakers start to really pay attention to what this grape is telling them – if you lean in real close you can actually hear them whispering, “I’m your grape.” Name any other grape and I’ll give you the country that is most recognized for it … but Cabernet Franc is a homeless wanderer – until now. 	Thirteenth Street 2005 Gamay Sandstone Reserve Another in my series of “to chill or not to chill” reds. Unchilled, this one leans towards strawberry earthiness on the nose, and earthY-dark fruit on the tongue. But stick it in the fridge for a couple of hours and you get more vibrancy of fruit. The strawberry takes off, leaving much of the earthiness behind, while the mouth becomes more fun, showing cherry - licorice notes; the earthiness also disappears here and becomes almost candied. Megalomaniac 2005 Bravado Cabernet Sauvignon In his inaugural offering of wines John Howard, former owner of Vineland Estates, released a couple of ‘04’s, a single ’05 and a number of ‘06’s (the ’04 by way of a blend and a Pinot, the ’05 as a single varietal, and the ‘06’s aromatic whites and a pink). 2005, being a short crop, didn’t allow for both a single and a blend, so winemakers had to decide how best to get the most out of the grapes they got.
