Ridgepoint Wines 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon

Whoa Nelly, another ’02 strikes again. This Cab Sauv from Ridgepoint is a double medal winner: a silver at the Ontario Wine Awards (2006) and a gold at the All Canadian Wine Championships (2006); and you can definitely see (or is that taste) why. Now you must realize there is lots of power in this bottle, and the awards are based more on potential then on how it’s showing now. But based on that alone you can see where this wine is going. In barrel for 24 months, the oak influence really sho...

Coyote’s Run Estate Winery 2005 Cabernet

Because of the short crop in the 2005 vintage, we are going to be seeing a lot of blends. At many wineries, the grape quantities weren’t high enough to make it viable for them to make single varietals, unless of course they were going for limited quantity production. We’ve already caught a glimpse of this at Carmela Estates in Prince Edward County with their three grape white 2005 Terroir Twist. And in Niagara, we see it at Coyote’s Run with their red blend, Cabernet. 2005 is going to showcas...

Long Dog Winery NV Tumbling Stone

I have tasted James’ 2005 all county Pinot Noir and I will admit it’s good, very good … but at the time of this review it had yet to be bottled – and the price point was going to be too rich for my blood (~ $45 a bottle) – worth it, but not within my budget. On the other hand, this little beauty is well in my wheel house (at $16) and delicious to boot. It too is all county fruit, but not from the same year, which is what makes it non-vintage. A blend of 80% Gamay Noir and 20% Pinot Noir, it c...

Flat Rock Cellars 2004 Pinot Noir Clone Research

Pinot Noir is one of the most interesting grapes in the world because, it is constantly mutating, hence the Pinot Noir vines we see today will be different in 10 years, changing and adapting to their environment, and in another 10 years different again. Here’s the explanation as taken from the Flat Rock literature: “[a clone] is essentially a spontaneous mutation of a “parent” vine that has been propagated over time. Due to the fact that Pinot Noir is genetically unstable, there are possibly ...

Southbrook Winery 2002 Cabernet Merlot

Steve Byfield is probably one of the best up-and-coming Ontario winemakers I have met. His wines consistently are of both high quality and standards and, what’s more, they are beginning to win awards. This ’02 is no exception. The nose has plenty of woodsy oak notes, along with cassis, mild green pepper and blackberries … still quite tannic this wine could use a little time in the cellar, or a Spiegelau Cabernet glass to open it up a bit. Earthy and woodsy on the tongue with lingering tastes...
