Black Prince Winery 2004 Cabernet Franc

Black Prince Winery has the distinction of being one of the two wineries from which I purchased one of my 2 bottles, bought back in 2004; so I was looking forward to returning and sample something else. This 2004 Cabernet France is a soothing wine, because it doesn’t strive to be anymore than what it is, an easy-drinking, light-bodied wine, good with a wide variety of foods (on this night meatloaf and mildly sauced short ribs). There’s some mild green pepper and sweet tobacco on the nose, whil...

Huff Estates Winery 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc

This blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cab Franc is still pretty young – so it’ll need a little time to settle down and develop in the bottle to smooth out some of those fierce tannins and rough edges; but if you insist on trying it now, a good hour in a decanter will work wonders. Made from Niagara fruit, this wine showcases the winemaking skills of Huff’s winemaker Frederic Picard. A white pepper nose with plenty of spiciness, some red pepper and other herbaceous notes are also present...

The Grange of Prince Edward County 2004 Cabernet-Merlot

As far as I can tell, this is the first Prince Edward County wine accepted into the Vintages program at the LCBO – hmmmm, wait, I think this is the first ever Prince Edward County wine at the LCBO period. Which shows you just how far this little-region-that-could, has come. Let’s find out why this one was chosen: the wine itself is a deep rich hue of purple, with dark fruit and pepper spiciness on the nose. Taste-wise, you’ll find cassis, blackberry and some loganberry, mixed with some of th...

Carmela Estates 2004 Pinot Noir

I trust you all read my review about another Norman Hardie wine a few weeks back (2005 Riesling) – but wait, you’re saying, this is a Carmela Estates wine, not a Norman Hardie; well it just so happens that Norman Hardie is the winemaker of Carmela also. The 2004 Pinot Noir is as simple as it is delicious – made from Niagara Pinot there’s plenty of dark fruit on the nose and some sour cherry, mixing it up with earth and vanilla notes. On the tongue, it’s even simpler, strawberry, black cherry a...

Thirteenth Street Winery 2004 Cabernet Franc

This really is a no nonsense wine. It’s nice, easy, approachable and ready to drink. It’s medium-bodied with a medium length finish. Ken Douglas informed me that they sampled all their barrels of 2004 Franc and decided on a few to make into this straight Franc, “the ones without the herbaceous tones to them, and the ones with more subtle nuances and flavours” – and they were right to do so. On the nose, there are subtle hints of cherry and on the palette, you’ll find prominently a sweet cher...
