Smith & Wilson 2004 Double Barrel

Smith & Wilson is one of the newest wineries in the Lake Erie North Shore (LENS) area … they are also the furthest away from where all the action is – about half-an-hour east of Lemington along highway 3 near Blenheim. There they make a variety of fruit wine, grape wine and dessert wine. There’s something for every taste and palate. Their Double Barrel is a take off of their name (Smith & Wilson // Smith & Wesson) and is a blend of Cabernet Franc (85%) Merlot (15%) with notes of smoked bacon,...

Colchester Ridge Estate Winery 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot

It’s time like these that I wish I could put a glass of wine in your hand and tell you what’s going on and see if you agree … but because I can’t, I’ll ask you to grab yourself a bottle of this wine and follow along. Colchester Ridge is one of the newest wineries in the Lake Erie North Shore area. Brian Gorski has crafted a lovely red here, with notes of licorice, cassis, blackberry, vanilla, oak and coffee on the nose. The taste is just as lovely, lots of black fruit and oak, some raspberry ...

Calamus Estate 2005 Meritage

In late January, I was slipped a barrel sample of this wine, and in a discussion with one of the winemakers at Calamus was told, “It’s a BIG wine!” Not wanting to open it up to early, I rested it on the rack for about a month, hoping to avoid any bottle shock that might be present. Now a month later, I popped the cork and agree whole-heartedly with the winemaker’s assessment; this is a BIG wine. Big enough, in fact, that I put it through its paces to see how it would change under different co...

Muscedere Vineyards 2004 Cabernet Franc Reserve

Here’s where the effects of ageing in oak can really be seen (and tasted of course). Where the unoaked version was more fruit, this version is woody, tannic and with more spices mixed in with the fruit. There’s the typical green pepper found in many Ontario Cabernet Francs, along with white pepper and cherries on the nose. It’s when you take your first sip that you start to get some spices, mainly vanilla and cinnamon, along with a great raspberry flavour that flows continuously through your ...

Muscedere Vineyards 2004 Cabernet Franc (unfiltered)

I’m noticing these days that winery’s are taking a chance and experimenting with Cabernet Franc, like they’ve been experimenting with Gamay (regular readers of my newsletter know Gamay is usually light and fruity, but I have been applauding the wineries that are making more full bodied ageworthy version out of this grape). Cabernet Franc is typically a medium to full bodied wine, with good firm tannins in its youth, allowing it to age for a number of years. This is usually achieved through oak...
