Fielding Estate Winery 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon

My number one selection from the April 2007 open house of new releases. Sure springtime is all about whites but this Cab Sauv almost talked to me from the glass, begging me to jump right in. Barrel fermented and then aged for 12 months in French oak, the nose shows signs of where it has come from and where it is going. Some toastyness and hits of sweet tobacco are from the barrel, but what is really exciting for your olfactory lobes is the strawberry, raspberry, cherry, blackberry, cassis and...

Henry of Pelham 2004 Meritage (Cabernet-Merlot) - $14.95

2004 wasn’t a particularly impressive vintage – when compared to say an outstanding one like 2002, but next to the 2003 vintage it definitely had more high points – I would say this lovely drinking wine is one of those “high points”. Blackberries, black cherries and blueberries on the nose with a little cedary vanilla seasoning. Ripe fruit with lean tannins in the mouth – black and red fruit intermingle on the palate, you’ll find red raspberries and black cherries are also kicking around for y...

Henry of Pelham 2003 Meritage (Cabernet-Merlot)

Pulling out a stored bottle of 2003, I found it showing lots of woodsy and black characteristics. It is important to note that the 2003 crop was not a very good one for reds in Ontario, the vintage itself was a short crop due to below average temperatures throughout the region, many varieties did not survive the winter damage; therefore winemakers in the area had to make do with what they got. At Henry or Pelham veteran winemaker Ron Griesbecht did his best to salvage the season, and as with m...

Henry of Pelham 2005 Cabernet Franc

It’s not every year that Henry of Pelham makes a straight Cabernet Franc, they usually put the grape into their Meritage blend, but lucky for us in 2005 they decided to grace us with a well-priced, well-made straight Cab Franc. Daniel Speck, vice president Sales and Marketing, told me via email, “Cabernet Franc ripens unevenly on the vine, greenish clusters will set right next to a red one … we don’t want green flavours in the wine so we prune vigorously [before budding], then early in the seas...

Sandbanks Estate Winery 2005 Baco Reserve

There is no wonder what-so-ever in my mind why this wine placed so well during the OntarioWineReview Baco Challenge … For those who missed it, this Sandbanks Reserve finished 2nd amongst some very stiff competition in the reserve category. And while winemaker/owner Catherine Langlois sweated over the fact that she sent in a barrel sample, she had no reason to. I am happy to report that the finished product is even better than I remember, and here’s why. First there’s the presentation, the bot...
