Sandbanks Estate Winery 2005 Cabernet Franc

When you only have 4 wines (currently) – it makes it easier to pick a favourite than when you have a wall full … that’s why this Cabernet Franc is the Pick of the Bunch this week. Had I not been to the winery, tried the wine there; then bought a few bottles and tried them again at home, I would have totally believed this fruit-bomb was from California or Australia. It shows that here in Ontario we can make a fully fruit driven wine from this grape. Aged 6 months in oak, this Cab Franc is allo...

Sanson Estate Winery 2002 Bird Dog Red

This wine is classic Sanson, and classic Ontario 2002: big flavours with a complex nose. Bird Dog is a typical Meritage blend of Cabernet Franc (40%), Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) and Merlot (20%), made from an exceptionally good year for grapes in Ontario, and by a very deft hand. Sanson continues to be one of those quiet wineries that’s making quality wines with a very loyal following – as our 2006 Crystal Cork Awards proved. I have met Dennis Sanson on a few occasions and his winery reflects ...

Huff Estates Winery 2005 South-Bay Cabernet-Merlot

Huff Estates is on my list of the top five wineries in Prince Edward County, and they prove why they are on that list once again with this blend. This award winning Cab-Merlot (Top honoured red at the Artevino awards – the Prince Edward County wine awards) is sourced from their South-Bay vineyard, located in the southeast corner of The County and is Huff Estates most prized vineyard according to winemaker Frederic Picard. The nose reveals black cherries, cranberries, some raspberry, smoky cinn...

D’AngeloVineyards Estate Winery 2002 Cabernet Franc

My first visit to D’Angelo’s was a disaster – they had three wines on the shelf, a huge fruit fly infestation and one of the most unprofessional wine store employees I have ever encountered. I was later informed, by another winery, that Mr. D’Angelo himself was acting like an absentee landlord tending and caring for his vineyards in B.C. shunning his responsibilities in Ontario. Well word must have gotten back to him with regards to his first, and flagship, winery in South Western Ontario beca...

Dan Aykroyd 2005 Cabernet-Merlot

Now this is more like what I was expecting from a man who claims to love Bordeaux (“I like the big, bold monster Bordeauxs …” Dan Aykroyd). This blend is 45% Franc, 25% Sauv and 35% Merlot from the hot 2005 vintage; 13 months in French and American oak have given this wine some real heft. Currently, the nose is spicy oak and cedar with some leatheriness and herbaceous undertones. The taste is dark fruits and oak dominated, but should smooth out and start showing more fruit over the coming yea...
