	Viewpointe Estate Winery 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Anybody who’s paying any kind of attention to the Ontario wine scene knows that 2002 was a fantastic year for grape-growing and winemaking. That was 5 years ago and many of those wines are just coming into their own now. 	Colchester Ridge Estate Winery 2005 Merlot Here’s an Ontario Merlot you can drink now yet still hold for a few years if you wish. Most Ontario Merlot needs quite a few years to mellow, CREW has made one that’s drinkability-factor is immediate. Smells of plum, blackberry, pepper and other spices are quite inviting to the nose, while in the mouth you’ll get the tastes of tobacco, spices and blackberries with heavy tannins and some spiciness …but those heavy tannins don’t overpower. 	Colchester Ridge Estate Winery 2005 Cabernet Franc/Merlot In their first year CREW made a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend – this year they saved the Sauv for a standout solo bottling and instead blended the Franc with the Merlot … with more great results. The nose is fruit forward with some cinnamon added to the dark fruit and sweet beets. The taste is smooth and lush with black cherries and spice – light on tannins, so it’s an easy drinker, and well integrated with its wood, which it hung out in for 10 months. ... 	Viewpointe Estate Winery 2001 Cabernet-Merlot 2001 was a “suspect” year in Ontario – that’s the year the bugs came to town. Many of the wines were tainted with “ladybug”, the more technical term being “pyrazine” … those in the Lake Erie North Shore area cringe at that broad brush representation of the entire industry because they got tagged with that label too – though many of the producers making and selling wine at the time tell me they weren’t affected at all. “Niagara is the bellwether for the whole province, and that’s just not right...
