Hillebrand 2007 Trius Merlot

Talk about slipping in un-noticed, when I asked winemaker Darryl Brooker about this one, he said, “Is it out already?” A little rushed to market, he admitted, to keep the LCBO listing intact (the LCBO has a use it or lose it policy); this 2007 Trius Merlot is stunning and shows what the “best vintage ever” will be producing. Before I go any further, allow me to stress that when I say “rushed” in no means do I mean this wine is half-finished, Darryl did what he wanted with this wine, he just wo...

Hillebrand 2005 Trius Cabernet Franc

As Hillebrand waited for their 2004 Cabernet Franc to sell through, the 2005 edition just got better and better as it aged in bottle. As you may be aware, 2005 was the short-crop year in Ontario, but an amazing growing year. Because of the grape tonnage shortfall Hillebrand made only 3 red wines in 2005 … this is the last of those to come to market and the only single varietal (the other two were blends). 12 months in 65% French and 35% American oak, this wine exhibits a lush black cherry/byn...

Erie Shore Vineyard 2005 Cabernet Reserve

Erie Shores is a winery that proves the old adage, “it pays to specialize.” They are a winery which concentrates their efforts on a handful of grapes from which they feel they can grow and makes very good wines; one of those grapes is my favourite: Cabernet Franc. This reserve spent 20 months in 3 year old French oak barrels. Owner Harvey Hollingshead said its his best Franc to date. When asked how it compared to the 2002 he balks and says, “in ’02 the vines were too young to withstand the ...

Ridgepoint Wines 2005 Cabernet Merlot

Winemaker Arthur Harder is still plying his trade at Ridgepoint, and although he’s most noted as a white wine maker, he also makes decent and consistently good reds. Take this ’05 Cabernet Merlot for instance. The nose is full on juicy black cherry and blackberries and that juiciness follows through with more black cherry and a hint of woodsy tannin bite that leaves a little bit of dustiness behind on the tongue. This wine really is a gulpable beauty that I finished (with a little help – very...
