Malivoire 2006 Gamay

Those who know me know I have a soft spot in my heart for Gamay, so when I hear owner Martin Malivoire speak poetically about how the Gamay grape being perfectly suited for Ontario I get weak in the knees. So few wineries realize the potential of this grape in Ontario. 2006 was a decent enough year and this Gamay turned out decent in its own right. Light strawberry fruit on the nose leads to a touch of earthiness with good red fruit flavours. This one needs a chill to really show what it can...

Hillebrand 2005 Collect. Choice Cabernet/Merlot

As the ’05 reds really begin to role out, you really should be looking to snap them up. With all the hype and talk about 2007, everybody seems to be forgetting that aside from a short-crop, 2005 was also an excellent year, especially for reds. This Cabernet/Merlot blend surely does show off the vintage in a good light. 73% Cabernet Franc, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Merlot which spent one full year in oak; the results are red fruit, plum and spice on the nose – big black fruit, spicy, oak...

Jackson-Triggs VQA-“Esprit” 2005 Cabernet

The first VQA red on offer for this official Olympic wine brand still offers pretty good value at the price point and gives $1.25 from each bottle purchased towards our Olympic athletes. The wine was tasted in conjunction with a small tasting panel of 4 people so as to remove what may be perceived as my potential bias. The nose is very nice, with cherries and blackberries, along with woodsy notes and a hint of vanilla. In the mouth, the vanilla disappears, leaving behinds black fruit, herbs...

Stratus 2005 Red

Still in its infancy when tried so it needs plenty of aeration to get anything out of the nose or taste. Spicy, black fruit with lots of barrel notes on the nose. A little more comes through on the tongue with peppery-black fruit holding court with some cedary tones. Nice balance of tannins and acidity makes it approachable now (if decanted), or hold for a decade in the cellar. Price: $44.00...
