Stratus 2005 Red

Still in its infancy when tried so it needs plenty of aeration to get anything out of the nose or taste. Spicy, black fruit with lots of barrel notes on the nose. A little more comes through on the tongue with peppery-black fruit holding court with some cedary tones. Nice balance of tannins and acidity makes it approachable now (if decanted), or hold for a decade in the cellar. Price: $44.00...

Bergeron Estate 2006 Gamay

The piece-de-resistence at this new Prince Edward County winery ... this 100% County-fruit Gamay is lightly oaked, only 20% of the wine was aged in new French oak for a “limited time”. The nose is faint with blackfruit and a touch of vanilla – but it’s on the palate where all the fun and finesse happens: strawberry, raspberry, touch of black cherry and a little white pepper at the end … it got better and better with each sip. Rosehall Run 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon

20 months in new French oak has given this wine power and punch. The nose is leathery, black cherry and black raspberry; the flavours mimic the nose though it switches the leather for more cedary notes, all with the addition of vanilla-cinnamon undertones. Rich and tannic, this wine will be sitting pretty in ten years time. Price: $29.95...

Rosehall Run 2006 Cabernet Franc

This Franc is made from all County fruit and had a kind of double ageing process. 55% went into new and one year old French oak for 9 months; the other 45% sat for only four months in a mix of 2-plus year old French, American and Hungarian oak. The nose is subtle with red fruit and a touch of smokiness; while the flavour profile brings more to the table. Red fruit, cinnamon, a touch of tannins on the finish – but the best part of this wine is that it is smooth and silky – a wine you shouldn’t...
