Reif Estate Winery 2006 Chenin Blanc

Winner of the 2007 Ontario Wine Award gold medal for dry white – this Chenin is a gulpable wine for drinking anytime. In the mouth, it’s lively with plenty of apple and pear freshness and a touch of citrus undertones. It’s crisp yet soft with a short finish – which means you keep coming back to the well for more, and isn’t that what a good wine is all about? Price: $18.95...

Colchester Ridge 2006 Chardonnay

I was very pleased to see this little winery from the Lake Erie North Shore take gold at this year’s Ontario Wine Awards for their Chardonnay. The smells are pretty simplistic, dominated by apples and lemons; but in the mouth is where we find its complex side: good green apple tang and a peach-lemon finish. What really makes this wine a winner is that it’s refreshingly crisp and clean … just lovely, as the unoaked flavour play and dance on your tongue; fresh and lively is the best way to desc...

Magnotta 2006 Medium Dry Riesling Special Reserve

This is another of those Rieslings being made in the Niagara region that’s well priced and delivers great refreshment at the same time (see the Niagara College 2007 for another). This one’s not going to blow you away with minerality and high acidity – which makes it perfect as a quencher for poolside enjoyment on a hot summer day. Apple is the most prominent smell on the nose, while apple/peach with a squeeze of lemon delivers your taste sensation from mid-palate all the way to the refreshingl...

Henry of Pelham 2007 Pinot Blanc

It would seem that Pinot Blanc is having a little bit of a coming out party in Niagara – this little heard from grape (except on Canada’s west coast) has some devotees and a handful of producers in the Niagara region. This Pelham version is a little drier than either the Vineland or Coyote’s Run ones, but it still has great pear fruit and a touch of citrus in the mouth. Delightfully refreshing on a hot summer’s day, with brisk acidity and lots of yum. Good price too. Price: $14.95...

Flat Rock Cellars 2007 Riesling

Since they opened their doors in 2003, Flat Rock has consistently made some of the best Rieslings in Niagara – and has won quite a few awards in the process, here’s another Riesling-beauty: peach, apple, pear, a dash of sweetness (1), along with good old-fashioned tropical notes and a crisp clean acidity to round it off nicely. Price: $16.95...
