Peller Estates Private Reserve 2006 Riesling

Peller was the only Canadian winery to pick up a medal (silver) at the prestigious 2008 Riesling du Monde competition … over 500 Rieslings were entered from all over the world, and we all know who rules in that category on the world stage, so to pick up a silver is a pretty big deal. So what does a world silver medal Riesling taste like? Like a very good Riesling - but I suspect you want to know more than that. Well this Riesling is big on minerality, with peach and lime as back up. The tast...

Lailey Vineyard 2007 Riesling

Derek Barnett is at it again. I have been a fan of his Rieslings since his days at Southbrook and all these years later, he’s still producing great Riesling. This 2007 is truly outstanding – everything you drink Riesling for and a whole lot more. When you first get it to your nose, you’ll smell anise and fennel that floats around in and amongst the usual peach, floral and a bit of orangyness. Then you put it to your lips and into the mouth it goes: apples pop, lime zings, white peach coats a...

Hillebrand Winery 2006 Showcase Riesling

You might start to believe that Rieslings in Niagara are a dime a dozen, everyone makes them and it seems they’re all made pretty well – and they’re getting better year-after-year. This is Hillebrand’s top tier Riesling – “showcasing” there best fruit. The nose is more fruit (white peach, citrus and a touch of melon) than the mouth, (good minerality with touches of peach and citrus) – great acidity and a medium length finish makes this one a pleasure to sip on. Price: $25.00...

Hillebrand Trius 2006 Riesling Dry

Funny to call this a “dry” Riesling, when all indications point to something sweet. A nose that’s got all kinds of sweet tropical fruit like pineapple core and mango, along with some peach pit nuances. The taste is most reminiscent of fruit cocktail, but instead of the sweet syrup, this one delivers a tart bite in its sauciness – it’s a great mix of sweet and tart with an incredibly long finish. There’s no wonder this wine won for best Riesling at the 2008 Cuvee Awards. Price: $13.75...

Featherstone 2007 Old Vines Riesling

I was a big fan of this wine last year, that was the first time Featherstone separated their old vines from their other Riesling plantings, and made a specific ‘old vines’ wine. In its second incarnation, it is just as wonderful a wine as the first time – maybe even better. The nose seem more exotic, with peaches, floral and citrus mixing in subtly with mineral and wet stone smells. In the mouth, you can taste who’s in the driver’s seat for this wine – those mineral flavours are all over the ...
