Lailey Vineyard 2006 Gewurztraminer

The last time Lailey made a Gewurzt was back in 2002, not because winemaker Derek Barnett doesn’t like making it, in fact he loves it, but because of the killing winters that Ontario has seen, and the recovery time of the vines. 2006 was the first full crop of Gewurzt Lailey has seen since the ’02 harvest. This beauty is for the purists of the “G”-grape, full on floral and rose petal on the nose with plenty of floral and orange blossom on the palate … a word to the wise: to those who like thei...

Mike Weir Estate Winery 2006 Chardonnay

So far Weir’s wines have proven themselves to be the better of our celebrity winery’s products – could that be because they’ve been around longer or because of the winemaking team behind them? Whatever the reason, the Mike Weir wines have been consistently good wines and good values since they first hit the market; rising above the gimmick of celebrity and concentrating first and foremost on the wine in the bottle, not the name on the outside, and they continue to improve year after year. This...

John Howard Cellars ... 2006 Contrarian Sauvignon Blanc

This wine is contrary enough to have the words on the label printed backwards, but pleasant enough to be another “fun” addition to the maniac line. Andrzej Lipinski, the winemaker for this project, is known for making good white wines – he did it for DeSousa, Fielding and now the Megalo himself, John Howard. This Sauv Blanc has hay, grapefruit and lime on the nose, while the mouth plays guessing games as to what flavours you’re gonna get next in and amongst all that good acidity. Light pear a...

John Howard Cellars ... Megalomaniac 2006 Narcissist Riesling

This Riesling is made from the grapes grown on “Edna’s Vineyard” – owned by Edna Thompson … John Howard goes out of his way on the back of the bottle to let us know this information. But this is not unusual for Mr. Howard – it seems he knows winemaking is not a solo-effort and for a “Megalomaniac” he’s very gratious about giving thanks to both his winemaker, Andrzej Lipinski, and his vineyard manager, Duante Oliveira. This Riesling owes a lot to those people, because Riesling is one grape that...
