Hidden Bench 2005 Riesling

I have heard some horror stories about Hidden Bench – mainly to do with their outrageous tasting fees (and we all know what my feelings are about those), but I slipped in after-hours and sweet-talked the 5-day-rookie behind the tasting bar into pouring me a splash of this Canadian Wine Awards gold medal winner. The nose is peach, apricot and pear, very succulent and inviting. The mouth comes off much drier than the sugar code one that it is, with white peach and apple (by way of Granny Smith) ...

Thirteenth Street 2006 June’s Vineyard Riesling

Another fine offering from the 13th Street boys, this one’s the soft sipping kind, the one you sit on the deck or patio with to while-away the hours of the day (though you’ll probably finish the bottle within the first hour). Soft peach on both the nose and taste, with lots of apple backing it up – there’s also a hint of key lime pie in the background. Thirteenth Street 2006 Funk Vineyard Riesling

Thirteenth Street has always been known for making good, solid Rieslings, and in a variety of styles. This is their dry style with plenty of acidity to cleanse the palate, making it an excellent food wine. The nose is peach, candied apple, floral and honeysuckle; while in the mouth there’s lots of minerality with a dash of peach and mouth watering acidity that keeps you swallowing long after the wine has traversed down the throat....

Thirteenth Street 2006 Chardonnay Musque

“What’s a Chardonnay Musk?” I heard someone say, “it doesn’t smell like musk.” No in fact it smells like peaches, sweet pear and a touch of floral. It doesn’t taste musky either, though it’s drier than you’d assume, given the nose: tart green apple and white peach. As for the name, it’s pronounced “Moose-K”, and it’s a clone/natural crossing (debate still on-going) of Chardonnay … let’s call it the more aromatic and sweeter cousin, okay? It could even be the darling of your next party – it...
