Lailey Vineyard 2005 Canadian Oak Chardonnay

I am not secretive about my ABC affliction (Anything But Chardonnay) – I have always found Chards to be too something: oaky, buttery, brassy, heavy … and winemakers use a very heavy and intrusive hand when making them. Sure, it’s the world’s favourite white, but I still have trouble getting my lips and tongue around a glass. There are two exceptions to that rule: 1) I am drawn to unoaked versions more than oaked versions, and 2) a good, unique oaked version. Well I can now plunk Lailey Vine...

Ridgepoint Wines 2005 Riesling

So you’ve probably read about the 2005 Medium-dry Riesling from Ridgepoint and are wondering how the two wines compare. This one is drier and has more balancing acidity … that’s the Reader’s Digest version, but let’s dig a little deeper. While the medium-dry was a perfect little sipper on it’s own, the dry Riesling is a perfect pairing with chicken, fish, pork or other light dishes. Both wines have similar smells, but this drier version removes those exotic fruits from its repertoire, choosin...

Ridgepoint Wines 2005 Riesling Medium-Dry

Ever notice how off-dry means slightly sweet and medium-dry also means slightly sweet … seems no matter how you pour it, you’re getting sweetness and sometimes the same level of it. I guess it’s just up to the winery and winemaker to determine the terminology they want to use. This is a medium-dry wine, and yes there’s definitely some sweetness, but it’s so much more complex than that. A nose that at first smells of lemon and lime, but develops more complexity the longer it sits in glass, wit...

Flat Rock Cellars 2005 Riesling

I have been trying to get a review out to you about this wine for awhile, but if I don’t act now, and act fast, you’ll all lose out because the last I heard (two weeks ago), 50 cases were left and that was just about the time Wine Access magazine named it best Canadian Riesling at the Canadian Wine Awards, and White Wine of the Year … so as you would expect it is selling pretty fast. So why were such momentous accolades thrust onto this wine? Because it is very good and here’s why: first, whe...

Calamus Estate Winery 2005 Pinot Gris

Here’s another good value from Calamus. Pinot Gris is usually a dry fruit driven white wine, but lately the trend has been to make it slightly sweet (1) thus giving us flavours that lean more towards Riesling; this is one of those Gris’. It has a nose of apples and peaches with the faintest hint of citrus. The mouth is a different story – there’s a sweet beginning to this wine and a tart finish – all the while, a creamy peach-like taste lingers in the mouth. Golden in colour, this sweet sipp...
