Calamus Estate Winery 2005 Riesling

One of Niagara’s newest wineries, Calamus, is actually a shed at the end of one of the regions prettiest drives. Located near Ball’s Falls, Calamus is a winery in its infancy. A reasonably priced wine list (nothing over $22 – most wines under $15) and some tasty offerings could also make them Niagara’s best value winery. If you remember, a few newsletters ago I nominated Featherstone as Niagara’s smallest tasting room, but Calamus has wrestled the mantle away with a tasting room a quarter of ...

Chesslawn 2003 “Caledon Living” Blend

Here’s a unique blend from a unique winery … Chesslawn is one of Ontario’s newest wineries, having open their doors in October of 2005, and located in of all places, Bolton, north of Brampton. Not the place one would think of for a grape winery. The owners are a family dairy farm who were looking for something more challenging, and growing grapes north of the big smoke seems to have struck them as that challenge. Dave Matson brings his passion for wine to both the growing of grapes and making...

Flat Rock 2004 “The Rusty Shed” Chardonnay

This is a completely different kind of Chardonnay … this is Flat Rock’s reserve Chardonnay made from their best grapes grown in a section of the vineyard that also houses a rusty old shed – hence the name. The playful back label explains the origin of the name and the grapes. Flat Rock is one of Niagara’s newest wineries and their focus is on Rieslings, Chardonnays, and Pinot Noirs … as their portfolio shows. Their 5-level gravity flow facility is truly unique. 100% of their wines are under ...

Colio Wines 2005 Gewurztraminer

For comparison and contrast to the ’02 version, try the newer 2005 version. Heir apparent to master winemaker Carlo Negri, Tim Reilly tried a different yeast strain in this year’s version and ended up with a very different, yet impressive wine. The smells jump from the bottle the moment you pop the cork, and even more aromas are released into the air as you pour it into the glass. Lovely smells of lychee and mandarin orange mingle with peculiar fresh cut grass undertones (which you’d be more ...

Colio Wines 2002 Gewurztraminer

As a general rule, Gewurztraminers don’t have a long shelf life, they’re one of those wines best served young and fresh, which is what makes this one such a surprise. Four years away from harvest, the nose is still lively with plenty of green apple, peach, cantaloup and kiwi. Unfortunately, the taste does not deliver the exotic fruit salad of the nose’s promise. The fruit tastes have softened and smoothed over time, giving way to petrol, lanolin, and some muted fruit flavours. The nose is te...
