Colio Wines 2005 Riesling

It would seem that as of late I am naming my wines something other than what they were named at the winery (see newsletter #39 – Featherstone Onyx). This Colio Riesling is a New York wine … you’ll understand in a few seconds. The first thing that wafted up from the bottle the moment I popped the cork was the smell of apples – a great big appley smell (see where I am going with this?). Pouring the wine into the glass unleashed more apple aromas (of the green variety), along with lemon and some...

Featherstone Estate Winery 2005 Riesling

So here’s a good one for you … a winery owner I know, (who soon will be moving to Niagara), was overheard saying “Ontario Riesling doesn’t sell, which is why we don’t make it.” Well, maybe he should talk to the other wineries in Niagara before making such statements to find out how quickly Riesling actually does sell, and I do mean out. This year alone, I know of a few wineries that released their Rieslings, “because my accountants told me to” as one Niagara winemaker/owner put it. That doesn...

Featherstone Estate Winery 2005 Topaz

I did a little checking on the Featherstone website to see what the availability of this wine was (250 cases produced), because this wine proves to be extremely popular each and every year. On the website, I was warned not to tell the exact make up of this primarily Riesling blend, because every year it’s just a little different … and Lord knows I do not want to be chained to the cellar wall. So instead of revealing the secret blend (to which I may or may not have been privy to), let’s look at...

Rosehall Run 2004 Sullyzwicker

Here are two questions you should be asking yourself: What’s an Ehrenfelser? And what in the world’s a Sullyzwicker? But no matter what answers you get, you’ll just have to trust me when I tell you, you’ll drink it and you’ll like it. According to Dan Sullivan, winemaker and viticulturalist of Rosehall Run, Ehrenfelser is a Riesling cross. He blends 94% of estate grown Ehrenfelser with 6% Niagara Gewurztraminer and comes up with this lovely summertime/anytime drink he calls Sullyzwicker … w...

Waupoos Estates Winery 2005 Geisenheim

Here’s another of those grape variety’s that’ll make you ask a variety of questions including: what on God’s green earth is a Geisenheim? Very little seems to be published about this grape, both in books or on the internet, but the little bird whispering in my ear tells me it has something to do with the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute (in Germany), Professor Muller-Thergau (after whom there is a grape variety named), and it’s a hybrid white grape variety. This particular Geisenheim has a...
