Tawse Winery 2004 Dry Riesling

Much of what I am about to say probably won’t win me many friends at Tawse, though I must say right from the outset I love this wine. Last year I visited Tawse Winery and walked away less than impressed … mainly about the wine. As everybody who reads my reviews knows, I am always looking for a good value to pass along: a Riesling for $12; a Cabernet Franc at $14.95 – wines that perform not only in the glass but are also a good bargain for the pocketbook. Tawse left me flat with $42 Chardonna...

Colchester Ridge Estate Winery 2005 Gewurztraminer

A simple yet delicious Gewurztraminer, the nose is floral noted with some well integrated citrus; the taste is totally in sync with the nose: floral and lime tastes, hints of typical Gerwurztraminer spiciness also peek through on the tongue; making this one heck of a wonderful and elegant sipper....

Aleksander Estates 2005 Late Autumn Riesling

A relatively new winery on the South Western Ontario scene, owner and winemaker Aleksander Bemben worked for Pelee Island Winery since the early 80’s before fulfilling his dream of opening his own place in May of 2005. This sweet little number is a party in the mouth, but it’s all about timing and as with most parties it begins slowly, so bare with it. Right from the pop of the cork (when the door opens) it has a strong petrol nose, 15 minutes later apple starts to peak through the petrol curt...

Erie Shore Vineyard 2005 Riesling

Most Rieslings have a delicious sameness about them – you have your apple, pear and petrol, maybe some floral and citrus notes, and then a wonderfully delicious sweetishness on the palate. So when something comes along that’s uniquely it’s own, you really stand up and take notice. This ’05 from the Lake Erie North Shore regions shows some difference on the nose that makes it quite unique – pink grapefruit cocktail – there’s absolutely no mistaking it … especially for a grapefruit fan like myse...

Thirty Bench 2005 Bench Riesling

Thirty Bench has become one of those wineries that has cut down their product line and have started specializing in certain grape varieties … like Riesling. On their current wine list they had 4 … 3 are vineyard specific and are produced small quantity, and then there is this one – which is a blend from all three vineyards and their entry-level value priced version at $18.00 (as opposed to the 28 and 32 dollar vineyard specific versions). This is a great place to start experiencing Thirty Benc...
