Norman Hardie Winery 2005 Riesling

This Riesling is so simple it’s scary, yet so delicious it’s wonderful. The simplicity starts right at the label with it’s single burgundy line that aimlessly makes it’s way around the bottle. The only picture to grace the label is a simple childlike house drawing … simple, clean, modern – which parallels the wine inside. Norm demands high quality Riesling fruit, which he painstakingly nurtures from his home in Prince Edward County – while the fruit itself grows on Niagara’s Beamsville bench ...

Flat Rock Cellars 2005 The Rusty Shed Chardonnay

Harking back to the previous vintage of this wine I would have to say that the 2004 Rusty Shed was my favourite Chardonnay of last year … it was just so unique, not just in name, but in flavours and aromas as well. When you’re at the winery, take a look out the back windows into the heart of the vineyard and you’ll spy the ‘Rusty Shed’ this wine is named after. Now maybe that shed imparts something to these grapes because the 2005 is another strong contender for my Chardonnay of the year. The...

Dan Aykroyd 2006 Chardonnay

I am not convinced that Dan likes whites very much. At the launch of this wine he is quoted as saying “[it’s] a compromise between my almost bitter palate and the Chardonnay that Niagara is known for … I’m satisfied with it.” This wine exhibits a very soft nose that is almost imperceptible as to what is in the glass; after 12 months in French oak, I was expecting a little more than what I got. The softness continues in the mouth and instead of oaky it’s tropical fruit and pineapple … but very...

Sandbanks Estate Winery 2006 Riesling

There are many that proclaim Riesling is Ontario’s grape to do wonderful things with; that’s because they have been privileged enough to try those Rieslings from the Beamsville Bench, where the Riesling fruit is simply top-notch; but what about the rest of the province? There aren’t too many trying their hand with this grape out in Prince Edward County, but those who do seem to have quite good success. Catherine Langlois of Sandbanks is one of those working with Riesling, and a good thing she ...

Tawse Winery 2004 Dry Riesling

Much of what I am about to say probably won’t win me many friends at Tawse, though I must say right from the outset I love this wine. Last year I visited Tawse Winery and walked away less than impressed … mainly about the wine. As everybody who reads my reviews knows, I am always looking for a good value to pass along: a Riesling for $12; a Cabernet Franc at $14.95 – wines that perform not only in the glass but are also a good bargain for the pocketbook. Tawse left me flat with $42 Chardonna...
