Featherstone Estate Winery & Vineyard 2006 Gewurztraminer

While the name might cause fits to some and tongue twisting action to others, this wine goes down with nary a problem, in fact its oh so nice. So to avoid tiring out the tongue muscles Louise Engel (of Featherstone) has dubbed this one “The G Wine” on her tasting notes. Rose water or rose petals entice the nose while spicy grapefruit tempt the palate … zesty and zingy with a medium long lychee fruit finish. Is that G for Gewurztraminer or G for Gee Whiz? Whatever it is, it should be G for go...

Featherstone Estate Winery & Vineyard 2006 Sauvignon Blanc

While I lingered around Featherstone, I heard Louise (owner) refer to this wine as “Savvy B” on more than one occasion. To me it showed a certain intimacy towards the wine, like calling a William, “Billy”. I think during her time off, Louise spent much of her time getting savvy with Billy, and why not, it’s tasty. Dave (winemaker) did some interesting things with this one, most interestingly is the double harvest: half the grapes at 17 brix (lower sugar content) and then waiting till the oth...

Featherstone Estate Winery & Vineyard 2006 Old Vines Riesling

Did someone say sixteen bucks for an old vines Riesling? Better be snapping that one up quick before they realize they’ve made a pricing error. This is the first time Featherstone has separated the Riesling from their vineyard into age designation. Dave Johnson has created an elegant and finesse-laden Riesling from some of the oldest vines in Niagara, rivaling those from both Vineland and Cave Springs for the title (30 years). He still keeps a dollop of sweetness (1) and by all rights this w...

Henry of Pelham 2005 Reserve Chardonnay

Looking for bang for your buck in a Chardonnay? This one delivers. Winner of the 2007 Cuvee award for best General List White (which means it’s readily available at the LCBO); this 6 month oak-aged Chardonnay is a winner on all fronts. First, let’s get the oaking part out of the way – I am not a fan of over-oaked Chard; Pelham deals with that barrel fermenting only 28% of this wine; the other 72% is done in stainless steel, which give the wine a chance to show off some fruit not just oak. Th...

Jackson-Triggs 2006 Proprietors Reserve Gewurztraminer

Somebody told me they either Jackson or Triggs is a huge gewürztraminer fan; so the winemaker has to do it justice or be fired; I'm not sure about the firing part, but the first part I believe. This is a beauty of a summer sipper and a bargain at $11.95. The typical telltale gewurzt nose is here – rose, lilac and floral - with a taste of lingering floral with some sweet spice … perfect with Asian and Thai fare … on its own … or better yet share it on the patio with friends....
