Pillitteri Estates Winery 2006 Sur Lie Chardonnay

A few weeks ago, Pillitteri released the first batch of wines made exclusively by new winemaker Marc Bradshaw, who at one point was assistant to former winemaker Sue-Ann Staff. Marc’s solo creations are pretty impressive. This Sur Lie Chardonnay has very little by way of the nose, but is refreshing and tasty once you get it past the lips. Good buttery-vanilla flavours meld together with tropical fruitiness … quite enchanting for your next outdoor get together....

Wayne Gretzky 2006 Unoaked Chardonnay

Famous people making wine have come to Niagara with a vengeance … first it was Creekside with their Mike Weir label, then came Coyote’s Run with Bob Izumi wines; Dan Aykroyd picked up the baton a few months ago with Diamond Estates at the helm and now Creekside gets into bed with another sports superstar, no. 99 himself: Wayne Gretzky. Instead of wondering who’s next, let’s look at what Gretzky has brought to the bottle. The nose is tropical fruit in nature with pineapple and apple notes bein...

Muscedere Vineyards 2005 Canadian Oaked Chardonnay

Of late I have been talking to winemakers who are having dalliances with a variety of wood – that might sound dirty but what I’m talking about is oak. Hungarian seems to be popular, “Eastern European” is another popular answer and Bulgarian is starting to crop up along with the usual French and American barrels; but very little is ever mentioned about our own homegrown Canadian oak. So I have to hand it to the boys with the Italian roots for staying close to home for a barrel or two of Chardon...

Ridgepoint Wines 2004 Medium Dry Riesling

Sometimes you take a sniff of a wine and get a familiar scent that you can’t quite put your finger on … well, that isn’t the case here. This wine is predominantly apple, yellow Delicious I would say, with hints of lime tartness. On the taste, more apples, this time a Spartan – because while it does have apple sweetness, there is a bit of a tangy zing, so it’s not too sweet. Finally, there’s a lingering apple finish, which is reminiscent of Granny Smith … so this one is apple from start to fin...

Southbrook Winery 2004 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay

Southbrook has always been known for their award winning Triomphe (Reserve) line of Chardonnays, but this little barrel-fermented beauty shows they are making great Chardonnay at both ends of the spectrum. With the wine making team of Steve Byfield and Ann Sperling and an imminent move to Niagara scheduled for early 2007, we’re expecting even greater things from this winery. But considering that Miss Sperling joined at the end of 2005 – this Chardonnay is a pure Byfield original. Notes of Pin...
