Southbrook Winery 2004 Southbrook White

Vidals… they’re a dime-a-dozen in Ontario, from table wines to semi-sweets, late harvests to our luscious icewine, everybody’s making one in some form or another – but finding one that really stands out is a challenge. Enter Southbrook’s 2004 Southbrook White (a bronze medal winner at the Canadian Wine Awards). The ‘04 was made entirely from Vidal grapes, and yielded some fantastic results. Winemaker Steve Byfield has crafted this beauty as an anytime sipper. Tropical fruits on the nose with...

Colio 2002 CEV Unoaked Chardonnay

In this seemingly all oak all the time wine-world in which we live it’s good to see someone bucking the trend and moving forward with an unoaked product, namely this lovely offering from Colio. Starting off with the look: a beautiful light yellow colour in the glass; follow that with a quick swirl and sniff that brings out the citrus tones, lemon, sweet pink grapefruit and a mild mineral aroma. On the palate the same flavours follow: splashes of lemon and grapefruit. The wine itself does not...

Featherstone 2004 Topaz

Take a so-so day (one where the first few wineries don’t seem to be cutting it); sprinkle in an unscheduled stop; add a friendly little dog named Bocci that greets you as you come up the drive and leads you to the tasting room; plus a winery that looks like it’s run out of the back of someone’s house, and you’ve got the makings of how we found this little gem. Featherstone’s Topaz (a Gerwurztraminer / Riesling combo) is a satisfying sipper with layers of smells on the nose and a clean crisp ref...

Stoney Ridge 2004 Muscat Ottonel

This wine yielded some very interesting results during our tastings. At a recent dinner celebrating Stoney Ridge’s 20th Anniversary, this wine lead off the evening with appetizers of artisan cheeses, crackers, bread, and fresh fruit … it was the perfect companion for this beautiful late-summer evening patio get together. Hints of sweet honeydew melon and floral aromas … followed with luscious apples, pears, honey and melon on the palate. Of course this delightful tasting vino prompted us to b...

Erie Shore Vineyard 2003 Vidal

This is another great little semi-sweetie that tastes sweeter than it actually is. This vidal has the saving grace of having great citrus tones which pull it back from the edge of being overly sweet. Great citrus and floral nose, mild citrus on the palate along with apple, Bartlett pear, kiwi and a pleasant medium-long finish that lingers just long enough until you take your next sip. A fine patio sipper that allows you to while away the hours during the peaceful late summer and early fall. ...
