Smith and Wilson Estate Wines 2006 Viognier

While some yahoo out in Niagara believes he can get $49 for his 2006 Viognier, let me tell you there’s a better option for much less money; the one drawback is its further away from Niagara – not such a drawback if you’re in the area or willing to make the drive. In Blenheim, 50km east of Leamington, lies Smith and Wilson, and they make the only Viognier in the Lake Erie North Shore area, from their own 4 year old vines. An aromatic white that has luscious apple and peach on the nose with flav...

Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery 2006 Pinot Gris

Summer looks good with wines like this to sip on in the backyard with your feet dangling in the Mr. Turtle Pool. The nose is citrusy-grapefruit and peachy; the palate mirrors the nose with some laid back acidity, making this one soft and easy with just a touch of sweetness (1) and a good lengthy finish. Only 85 cases of this were made, so stock up and enjoy....

Viewpointe Estate Winery 2005 Riesling

Viewpointe’s wine store is finally open. Viewpointe is a beautiful property that overlooks Lake Erie and has so much potential – and trust me they are making every effort to take advantage of it. It has the makings of being the showcase winery for the area, but we’ll save that assessment for another day and instead talk here about the wine; Riesling to be even more specific. The 2005 Rieslings in Niagara proved to be exceptional, now it’s time to try something from the other side of the provi...

Vineland Estates Winery 2006 Dry Riesling

In France, the bell-weather for the most recent vintage is Beaujolais-Nouveau, the very first wine made from the new crop. It comes out in November, just in time for American Thanksgiving. It’s light, fruity, has no oak age what-so-ever and little manipulation is done to the grape; it’s literally pressed, fermented and bottled … voila, a ready to drink wine for immediate consumption (by Christmas or so). The bell-weather here in Ontario seems to be Riesling. It’s usually the first wine to co...

Thirty Bench Winemakers 2006 Riesling

The 2005 Thirty Bench Riesling became a model for all to follow – a blend of Riesling grapes from 3 of their vineyards. Then Thirty Bench made more expensive and more expressive single vineyard Rieslings using the best grapes plucked from those vineyards. I’m not surprised to see them do the same thing this year, because it proved to be wildly popular, not just with Riesling drinkers, but with all wine drinkers because it gave them a something-for-everybody selection. This ’06 is another tast...
