Mountain Road 2003 Special Select Late Harvest Vidal
Many moons ago (back in 2004) Steve Kocsis, winemaker and owner of Mountain Road, made a wine of epic proportion and a pricing error of the same size. He produced a Botrytis Affected Riesling that was to die for, bottled it in 750ml bottles and sold it for around eighteen bucks. Those who know and love B.A. Rieslings know this is unheard of. This year Steve released the 2005 version in smaller bottles (375ml) for $25 (I was heart broken), but in truth it is not only half the size, but half th...

Magnotta 2005 Passito Vidal
Yet again Magnotta finds themselves taking a leading role in new wine styles for Ontario, while borrowing on some old world methods. A few years back, they introduced Enotrium – an Ontario version of Amarone using Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes, air-dried on mats, just like Amarone in Italy. Now they try to do the same with Vidal and dessert wines. Hand picked and left to air-dry, these Vidal lie around for 3 weeks before pressing, fermenting and fortification. The resu...

Lailey Vineyard 2006 Vidal Select Late Harvest
There are two ways to make Late Harvest wine: the first is to use the second pressing of icewine grapes, because the second pressing can no longer be called icewine, and the second pressing usually garners more juice because the grapes have thawed out. The second way, and winemaker Derek Barnett’s preferred method – sorry, scratch that, Barnett’s only method, is to actually plan on picking them late in the season, that way you can get the quality of grapes you want. This wine is stunning, wit...

Willow Springs 2003 Vidal Icewine - Testa
Beware of cheap icewine … my mother always tells me to avoid the word cheap, so let me try this again … Beware of inexpensive icewine (“that’s better dear”), it’s usually a sign that the wine has turned or is on the verge of turning into vinegar – sweet vinegar, but vinegar none the less. If you drink it soon, you still get icewine sweetness and enjoyment for a fraction of the usual price, though it has a tendency to wilt quickly in the glass. I’m about to give you a tip on the best deal on an...

Vineland Estates 2004 Cabernet Franc Icewine
My favourite Ontario grape (Cabernet Franc) also makes some of my favourite icewines because no matter how sweet they rise on the sugar code they always seem to lack the sticky cloyingness of Vidals. This superb wine has been re-issued by Vineland and is $42 for 200ml, but if you’ve never experienced a Cabernet Franc icewine, it is a taste treat well worth the price of admission. The nose is sweet and lush with strawberries, cherries and raspberries doused in pure chocolate … the taste shies a...
