Downey’s Estate Winery Red Currant

Is it a red? Is it a white? Maybe a rose? Nope, this is Red Currant wine and it’s something unique to Downey’s. I had never tasted a red currant in my life, so I had no idea what to expect from this wine, nor had most of the tasting circle. Great colour leads this one off – it shimmers in the glass and in the bottle – it has the colour of raw salmon. A touch of sweetness on the palate makes this an ideal match with all kinds of interesting dishes. One of the comments made: “You think it’s...

Applewood Farm Winery 2004 Elora’s Harvest

Talk about innovative … winemaker and owner Matthew Passafiume named this secret blend after one of his two daughters (there’s another called Eden – and she too has a wine named after her). There seems to be a little of everything in this wine, including some previous vintages of Elora’s Harvest. Matthew has been making this blend since 1999 … the same way each year – and every year he adds new ingredients to the mix … that way he can always claim “there’s a little bit in here from my very fir...

Wagner Estate Winery Bridal Path

Made with a blend of raspberries and vidal, along with a couple other varietals, this wine is an excellent summer afternoon patio sipper … raspberry smells hit the nose and then follow through on the palate. It smells like it is going to be a sweet dessert wine, but instead finishes toned down and refreshing. The beautiful color of this wine adds to it’s charm – and so does the great price - this is an excellent value for a fruity summer sipper you’ll find yourself relaxing on the patio with …...

Wagner Estate Winery Pug’s Head Cider

Every wine region needs a fruit winery to keep it honest … if that’s not an old saying it should be. While grape wines take on all kinds of different fruit flavours and smells, fruit wines stay true to what they were made of. This cider, the first made at Wagner’s, was made from Mac apples that did not change colour – they were on the inside of the tree and therefore ripened but never changed to that red colour you expect from a Mac. They were picked and plucked from the tree, mashed and ferm...

Stoney Ridge 2005 Cranberry Wine

Cranberry juice … God’s gift to the urinary track, or so we are told. I’m sure you have friends that swear by it, I know I do; but it has to be pure cranberry juice, not that “cocktail stuff”. Me, I like that cocktail stuff (you know, that mix of juices with cranberry being the most dominant) because it doesn’t have that big acidic-tart bite of the purer stuff and therefore, if I had my druthers, I would go cocktail as opposed to pure. Although I too, have succumbed to the “drink pure cranber...
