Stoney Ridge 2004 Pinot Noir

Lighter in colour than many of it’s counterparts, but showing a beautiful red hue. The nose was strawberry, raspberry and black cherry with light earth tones that mingled in nicely. Our tastebuds caught hints of strawberry and black cherry and in the mouth our receptors caught traces of tannins that caused a drying sensation about mid-way through. All-in-all, a delicious Pinot - smooth, velvety, soft and light. Nothing too taxing about this - a great starter Pinot for those who don’t like Pi...

Riverview Cellars 2004 Fontana Dolce

Sweet reds are few and far between in Niagara, I’m not talking icewine or Manechewitz type reds here – I mean “serious” wines that are red with a sugar code above one. This Fontana Dolce is a 3 … a blend of Merlot (50%), Baco Noir (25%) and Cabernet Franc (25%), and is an interesting wine for those who find reds too tannic or too dry for their liking. The nose is an interesting mix of strawberry, cranberry and citrus – the taste is extremely fruity and even better chilled. The sweetness comes...

Lailey Vineyard 2006 Syrah

Lailey makes two kinds of Syrah, one in Canadian oak and this one, made using a 50/50 split of French and American oak. Derek Barnett, winemaker, make his Syrah’s for the long haul, that’s why right now you’ll find more than average heft in this bottle, but give it 3-5 years and this baby will smooth right out. Currently, you’ll find lots of smoked meat characteristics on the nose along with a little white pepper, oak and some wet stone. On the palate it’s all peppery and tannic … but as I sa...

NCT Winery 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon

Not sure why I was so shocked and surprised by this wine, it’s not like the Niagara College Teaching Winery hasn’t been making award winning wines since their inception in 2002; I guess I just wasn’t expecting this tasty little number to be as good as it was when I walked in during the Taste the Season event in late November. I wasn’t prepared for the spicy black pepper and red fruit nose, nor was I ready for the red fruit loaded palate with plenty of strawberries and its peppery elegance in th...

Chateau des Charmes 2005 ‘Equuleus’

The horse is back, bigger, stronger and better than ever. Chateau des Charmes’ Equuleus is made from grapes harvested across the road at the Paul Bosc Vineyard and it is only made in the best years. The last time it surfaced was in 2002. This wine is a full on balls-to-the-wall red with a mixture of black and red fruit, strawberry, raspberry and cassis. The taste does not disappoint from the promise of the nose, following through with the dark fruits that include blackberries and black cherr...
