Mountain Road Wine Company 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon

I’m sure you must be tired of hearing this, but 2002 was a great year for Ontario reds. That said, this Sauv follows in the footsteps of some great ones that came before it … and I am sure some reserves that are still to come. What really got me here was the nose, it hit me with spearmint and sweet red pepper. What followed on the palate was completely different though. A tighter taste that was dominated by ripe firm tannins, black pepper and black fruit. I would say right now, it’s a red m...

Mountain Road Wine Company 2002 Reserve Gamay Noir

You might be sick of hearing me talk about Gamay, but because I love the grape and what we are doing with it here in Ontario, you’ll have to listen to me just a little bit longer. In France they make Beaujolais, which is a light fruity flavourful wine. Here in Ontario we also make a light fruity wine out of the Gamay grape, but there are some who are trying something different; and I am liking both versions. This reserve Gamay has lots of oak infused into the blend, you can smell and taste it...

Mountain Road Wine Company 2002 Cabernet Franc

What a wonderful wine … released earlier this year, during the New Vintages festival, when Mountain Road releases a plethora of wine from the great 2002 vintage – and most of them will age very well right into the next decade. This Franc is stunning, especially for the price. Currently the nose is loaded with green pepper, black pepper, tons of black fruit and oak. The taste is a little bit closed, showing signs of spicy black pepper, oak and a tannin grip that should loosen with more bottle ...

Colio Estate Wines 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon

It starts out as a simple sipper, but ends with some complexity, making this wine simple yet complicated, know what I mean? The nose shows plenty of promise, there’s lots of red berry fruit (primarily raspberry), you’ll also find some black pepper and sage spiciness, with cedar and vanilla thrown in for good measure. The taste is even more rewarding, a slightly bitter tannin grip and woodsy notes at the forefront, but as it makes it’s way through the mouth it gives way to a finish of cinnamon,...

Featherstone Estate Winery 2004 Estate Bottled Onyx

I don’t usually do this, plug a sold out wine, but this review is for all of you who were lucky enough to pick up a bottle or two (or three) of this wine.I dubbed this a Johnny B. Goode wine – more on that in a bit; but first let’s discuss this wine in a little more detail. It’s a blend of Cabernet Franc (50%) and Merlot (50%), made from a light vintage year (which is also mirrored in its colour) and aged in American oak. The flavours aren’t mind blowing, yet, but considering the year, the win...
