Mike Weir Estate Winery 2002 Cabernet Merlot

Mike Weir is already starting to make a name for himself … in the wine world that is. Canada’s best loved and most famous golfer (sorry Stephen Ames) has thrown his hat into the wine ring, and, as on the golf course, he’s already showing that he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with. Pairing up with the already multi-award winning Creekside Estate Winery, Mike Weir has found a “grape”-skins partner that is already paying dividends. Here’s proof: this 2002 Cab-Merlot won best Meritage ble...

Riverview 2003 Fontana Dolce

Smooth and supple tannins, a wonderful nose of sweet cherry and strawberry, and a taste of figs and plums with a byng cherry finish that’s medium long – are all features of this delicious sweetie. It enters the mouth sweet, but ends on a dry note. The Fontana Dolce is made from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 20% Baco Noir from domestic and imported fruit. A claimed 3 on the sugar code makes it sweet, but not sickeningly so. It coats the mouth with its subtle sweetness, before ending ...

Caroline Cellars 2004 Pinot-Cherry

The popularity of fruit wine can be summed up in a few words “no thought necessary” – meaning strawberry wine tastes like strawberries, blueberry wine tastes like blueberries, the same can be said for raspberry, apple, pear, peach etc. The brain does not have to process and decipher a variety of tastes and smells after you’ve read the label … the same can be said for this blend of both Cherry wine and pinot noir. It’s as uncomplicated as a wine can get. The cherry dominates the blend both in ...

Pillitteri Estate Winery NV Chariot Dolce

It used to be that sweet reds were a dime a dozen, but these days our palates have become more accustomed to the drier stuff … though sweetness seems to be coming back in style, as evidenced by the popularity of Yellow Tail wines and their ilk. This Pilliteri offering is part of this winery’s international series, which is a combination of foreign and domestic grapes, blended into this sweet little number. Aromas of plums and sweet cherries are the first to accost the nose, while the taste is ...

Harbour Estates Winery 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon

Here’s another strong wine from a strong vintage, with a totally unexpected surprise … faux-sweetness. Mint, yellow pepper and sweet red fruit accosts the nose – maraschino cherry is the closest approximation. Which translate on the palate to the sweet taste of cherries along with some blueberries and blackberries – the surprise of course is the sweet cherry taste for a wine ranked at a zero, making this wine a delicious pairing with lighter food and pizza, or even better yet, on it’s own. Dr...
