Erie Shore Vineyard 2005 Cabernet

There is a something very different about Cabernet Francs from the Lake Erie North Shore area versus those from Niagara. Niagara Franc has the green pepper factor (which I like) while Lake Erie seems to have more dark fruit characteristics minus the vegetal notes ... this is another perfect example of that difference. With little oaking (1 month) the fruit really comes through – though the palate stills shows signs of it’s American oak home. Deep dark berries on the nose, like black cherries...

Sanson Estates 2001 Barn Cat Red

Dennis Sanson has once again crafted a very interesting and delicious wine. The blend is 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Pinot Noir and on the nose all three grapes show their influence. Licorice (merlot); green pepper (franc); and earth (pinot noir) along with some burnt wood (toasted oak barrels) and white pepper spiciness. The taste is even more interesting, and inviting, with the licorice and earth following through from the nose, but with some black fruit companions along for the ...

The Grange of PEC 2005 Trumpour’s Mill Cabernet-Merlot

Later this year (September 2007), The Grange will once again get this wine into Vintages; the 2004 version was the first Prince Edward County wine to find its way onto LCBO shelves … and well, they've done it again. This time out, the wine shows lots of black fruit, cinnamon and cassis on the nose. The seven months in primarily new French oak has given the wine some very rich firm tannins, with lots of oak and black fruit (read: cassis) on the palate. Let this one settle down for a year and y...

Vineland Estates Winery 2005 Cabernet Franc

One sniff and one sip and you can see why this wine won Best Cabernet Franc at this year’s Cuvee awards competition. This is a perfect example of what Ontario Cab Franc should be. Look for black cherry, blackberry, rhubarb, sweet vanilla and cinnamon on the nose, with blackberry, cherry, sweet oak and good tannin structure in the flavours. This is one delicious wine – rumour has it that there was some micro oxigenation used in the making of this wine … that’s where oxygen is put through the w...

Fielding Estate Winery 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon

My number one selection from the April 2007 open house of new releases. Sure springtime is all about whites but this Cab Sauv almost talked to me from the glass, begging me to jump right in. Barrel fermented and then aged for 12 months in French oak, the nose shows signs of where it has come from and where it is going. Some toastyness and hits of sweet tobacco are from the barrel, but what is really exciting for your olfactory lobes is the strawberry, raspberry, cherry, blackberry, cassis and...
