Sanson Estate Winery 2001 Cabernet Merlot

This wine got stellar reviews from our panel when we brought it back from our Lake Erie North Shore trip. They went ga-ga over the fruity nose, with a slight hint of green pepper in the background. The mild tannins, the smooth mouth-feel … the pleasant bite on the finish. All indications point to a great wine drinking experience for the next few years to come. This medium bodied red was a real crowd-pleaser: “delicious”; “very nice” were just some of the comments … this could possibly be on...

Unity Wine 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot

The Cab Sauv-Merlot yielded more interesting comments – along with a pleasant fruity nose upon first snort, we discovered something even more interesting upon repeated swirling and sniffing: “HP Sauce” – was the way one panel member described the peppery-spicy smell, which suddenly had us all dreaming of steaks and burgers hot off the grill. A hint of tannin made for a nice easy drinking wine, which is best described as smooth, while the dryness in the finish made us once again crave something...

Wagner Estate Winery Log House Red

The most difficult part of our reviews is when a winery offers up so many good wines it’s hard to pick which one to review. We decided to start off with this great quaffer: Wagner’s only truly red wine. Harold called it his “meritage blend” – we called it delicious. With a blend of Baco Noir and other local grapes, it truly is a unique wine, one to hang out with friends pre-BBQ. There’s a slight hint of tannin, but a slight chill on the wine mellowed that right out … we slotted this one on ...

Southbrook 2001 Cabernet Merlot

Holy quaffable wine Batman have we got one for you! Over the past few years the OntarioWineReview staff has been keeping it’s eye on this family-owned winery north of Toronto. Some wineries that win lots of awards with their high-end wines make value priced drinkers that are stinkers – but not this one. This 2001 Cab-Merlot hits all the right spots … smells of fresh red pepper in the glass which delivers equally on the palate – and there’s a hint of tannin backbone that makes this one ideal f...

Inniskillin 2002 Merlot – Black Label

This wine can be summed up in one word – smooth … what a surprise based on many of the Ontario Merlots we have tried in the past. Truth is our panel is not a fan of Ontario Merlot, young Ontario Merlots especially: although we keep trying they’re usually too harsh, too tannic or too something else. That’s why this wine took us by surprise. Smooth, supple, easy drinking, low tannins – everything you don’t expect from an Ontario Merlot – opinions were definitely changed. Our hats come off to ...
