Peller Estates 2007 Private Reserve Muscat

This is the first time Peller has made this Muscat blend a Private Reserve. You usually find these grapes in their heritage blend white, but in 2007 they lowered the crop size (from 5.5 tons to 4 tons – to the acre) to try and get better quality fruit from the lowly Muscat grapes: Morio and Ottonel … and I think they have succeeded admirably. A 25-75 split (Morio-to-Ottonel), the wine is perfect for summer patio pleasures and sittin’ down on the dock at your nearest bay. The nose is what rea...

Legends Estates 2007 Sauvignon Blanc

I think Paul Lizak, owner of Legends, and Serge Papineau, winemakers, have neared Sauvignon Blanc perfection on this one – and I’m pretty sure they know it. “It’s bone dry,” Paul told me, “But the fruit …” he trails off as I nose the wine – and he’s right, the three G’s are there: grapefruit, grass and gooseberry – in both smell and taste. But what really makes this wine is the crisp, clean acidity that flows through the mouth and leaves a lasting finish that begs you to take another sip. De...

Caroline Cellars 2007 Gewurztraminer

“Of all the whites I’ve made this year, Richard Lakeit Jr., winemaker of Caroline Cellars told me, “this is clearly my favourite.” I’ll tell you what this “clearly” is – it’s the best Gewürzt-value in Niagara. While most Gewurztraminer’s coming out are between $15 and $20, this fourteen dollar bargain is just that, a bargain – and with only 300 cases of this 12% beauty available, it should go fast. The fruit comes from 3-year-old vines, so it’s very young, and it shows that vibrancy is the bo...

Jackson-Triggs 2006 Delaine Vineyard Riesling

If you are an Ontario wine lover you should be following this line of wines. Delaine Vineyard wines come from the single vineyard named for Don Triggs and his wife Elaine; year after year these wines continue to impress and as the vines age I can only imagine what there wines’ll do. This Riesling is big on apple juice for the nose; the flavours are subtler with floral, peach, apple and exotic/tropical fruits. The finish leans back toward the apples and peach. Price: $19.95...

Henry of Pelham 2007 Off-Dry Reserve Riesling

Pelham’s Rieslings are consistently good values and well made wines year after year – this one is no exception. This is a wonderful peach/apple mix of fruit on both the nose and palate and a nice petrol undercurrent is already beginning to develop. I recommend that you also taste for the mango that’s present, and pleasant, in the mouth. Price: $15.95...
