Cave Spring 2006 Estate Bottled Sauvignon Blanc

Cave Spring makes one of my favourite Rieslings of 2007, the Dolomite, which, if you don’t know, is loaded with great minerality and a touch of sweetness, but when mixed together it has an amazing dry effect. So I’m not surprised by what winemaker Angelo Pavan did with this Sauvignon Blanc. The nose shows little to no fruit; instead it’s intense with minerals and wet-stoniness. Put it in the mouth and it seems soft and a little green … where’s the minerality, where’s the sweet. Give it some ...

Calamus Estate 2007 Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris is suppose to be light and fruity, this Calamus version is all that with a little bit extra. First you’ll notice the colour – it seems to have a hint of an onion-skin colouration, which means there is some definite skin contact here. The nose has got plenty of fun fruit, namely peaches, apricots and a little apple. Then, when it gets into the mouth, whiz-bang, there’s even more excitement: crisp acidity, that provides a little bite, with intense fruit flavours – sweet apricots, ju...

Jackson-Triggs VQA-“Esprit” 2006 Chardonnay

The first VQA white on offer for this official Olympic wine brand still offers pretty good value at the price point and gives $1.25 from each bottle purchased towards our Olympic athletes. The wine was tasted in conjunction with a small tasting panel of 4 people so as to remove what may be perceived as my potential bias. The nose is oaky, buttery and vanilla driven, while the palate has all the fruit that the nose lacks. Citrus, apple, over ripe pear and a touch of vanilla to round it all o...

Coyote’s Run 2007 Pinot Blanc

Not much Pinot Blanc is made in Ontario, and up until now, Vineland was the only winery that I could name that made one (I’ve also learned that Konzelmann makes one); but along comes the boys from Coyote’s Run and they want to try their hand at making this Alsatian beauty too. So they buy some grapes from Vinlenad and give it a go … and don’t they just make the most delicious summertime refresher you could imagine. Just a touch of sweetness (1) gives extra life to this wine that is loaded with...

Niagara College 2007 Dean’s List Sauvignon Blanc

He’s the godfather of Canadian wine-writers, known around the globe by winery owners and winemakers, he even has an Order of Canada – but who would have thought that our own Tony Aspler would be elevated to Dean. Niagara College has asked Tony to rate some, of what they feel, are their best wines, and the one’s that make the grade get promoted to “Dean’s List” status – complete with report card label showing Tony’s handwritten scores. I can’t argue with the Dean on this one. This Sauvignon Bl...
