Cave Spring 2006 Estate Riesling

Riesling is becoming one of the signature grapes of Niagara, and one of those wineries with a reputation for making some of the best is Cave Spring. This wine is complex on both the nose and in the mouth. Apple and peach are the first smells to greet you, but then here comes melon, petrol and talc … the palate lives up to much of that nose candy while also delivering a touch of pear and citrus. Price: $18.95...

Le Clos Jordanne 2006 Village Reserve Chardonnay

The Village Reserve Chardonnay shows quite a bit of spunk for a bastard wine. These are the "declassified barrels" that did not make it into the single vineyard offerings, hence it is a bunch of vineyard's wines that had no other home than this one - orphans if you prefer. The nose contains smells of peach, pineapple core, vanilla and that lemon-lime beverage we all know as 'Sprite'. The taste is spicy and complex with buttery caramel and spiced apple amongst other flavours. For an orphan/ba...

Le Clos Jordanne 2006 Claystone Chardonnay

Of the four Chardonnays Le Clos makes this is my favorite of the 2006 vintage, and of their Pinots, the Claystone was my second favorite; so there must be something in this vineyard that appeals to me and my tastebuds. The nose starts off very Chardonnay-like, with the buttery-apple notes along with mineral, rusty apple and buckwheat. The palate shows some real finesse and fun flavours; sure there's apple, butter and mineral – that’s to be expected from this single vineyard Chardonnay, but the...

Le Clos Jordanne 2006 Le Grand Clos Chardonnay

My notes on this wine seem very simple, but keep in mind that the Le Clos whites (Chardonnay) are meant to age, sometimes longer than the reds, because they're more robust and heavy. What I tasted today (October 14, 2008) will be very different in years to come, because this wine will evolve and open itself more fully. The nose is buttery with a citrus splashed apple quality. The palate has a rich mouth feel with muted fruit flavours, a bit spicy, with a buttery and seemingly bubbly finish th...
