Kacaba 2003 Escarp. Series Chardonnay Sur Lie

Kacaba is a Niagara based winery that we rarely hear much about or from, sure they win their share awards and make some pretty good wines, but then they do it with much less fanfare then some. Here's a wine that may signal a new direction for Kacaba, sporting (literally) a flashy new label. A shiny, bright, eye-catching label means nothing if it’s not matched by something good in the bottle; consumers will buy a cutesy/impressive label once, but you’ll have to back it up with something good be...

Coyote's Run 2005 Off-Dry Vidal

You know Vidal as the icewine grape, just recently somebody commented to me, "you don't usually see Vidal outside of ice wine, but I like it as a table wine. " Well sure you do see it as a table wine, it's just sometimes labeled with a proprietary name like So-and-So's White. Coyote's Run chose to call their's by the grape’s name in an effort to keep it simple. Lailey Vineyard 2006 Fume Blanc

I tried this wine a few months ago back when it was first released, it was nice, but not $24.95 nice … now, 5 months later, it is finally coming into its own and the 24.95 price tag seems like more of a deal. Fume Blanc is Sauvignon Blanc that has seen the inside of a barrel, in this case, 7 months in one-year-old used French oak, of which 3 of those months were on the lees (dead yeast cells – lees sounds so much better doesn’t it?). The nose is vanilla with a touch of citrus and asparagus, bu...

Malivoire 2006 Chardonnay Musque “Spritz”

I picked up this wine during the Malivoire Spring open house … actually it was a reactionary wine purchase, I had just been to Tawse and was denied the ability to buy a single bottle of their Musque (instead being forced to buy 6 if I wanted any at all); suddenly I wanted a summertime Musque and dang it, someone was going to get my money and I was going to get a single bottle … Martin Malivoire was happy to accommodate taking control of my money and my tastebuds by providing a more than decent b...
