Rosehall Run 2004 Sullyzwicker

Here are two questions you should be asking yourself: What’s an Ehrenfelser? And what in the world’s a Sullyzwicker? But no matter what answers you get, you’ll just have to trust me when I tell you, you’ll drink it and you’ll like it. According to Dan Sullivan, winemaker and viticulturalist of Rosehall Run, Ehrenfelser is a Riesling cross. He blends 94% of estate grown Ehrenfelser with 6% Niagara Gewurztraminer and comes up with this lovely summertime/anytime drink he calls Sullyzwicker … w...

Waupoos Estates Winery 2005 Geisenheim

Here’s another of those grape variety’s that’ll make you ask a variety of questions including: what on God’s green earth is a Geisenheim? Very little seems to be published about this grape, both in books or on the internet, but the little bird whispering in my ear tells me it has something to do with the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute (in Germany), Professor Muller-Thergau (after whom there is a grape variety named), and it’s a hybrid white grape variety. This particular Geisenheim has a...

Waupoos Winery 2003 Riesling

I’m always on the lookout for stellar wines. Wines that make you stand up and take notice … they make you say, wow! … and they make you think: how’d they do that? To me, that’s a stellar wine. Of course, to get the real “wow!” the wine has to justify it’s price point. Waupoos Winery, I’m sorry to say, has never been known for any stellar wine. In fact, most people I spoke to about this winery, give them a passing shrug when they are mentioned. You’d think for one of the longest running wi...

Huff Estates 2005 Riesling Off-Dry

This smooth Riesling is delicious and pleasant in taste and fantastic aromatically; not as good as the 2004 version, but still very much worth picking up. The nose is ripe and full with apples, peaches, floral notes and mild citrus aromas. In the mouth, this semi-sweet beauty follows through on the apples and floral tones. There’s a slight citrus zing in the back plate and the finish is short in the mouth, but long in the throat … and unlike most 2005 Rieslings I’ve tried, the tart citrus pun...

The Grange of Prince Edward County 2005 Riesling

Any of you who have visited the Grange of Prince Edward County know that it’s an absolutely stunning piece of property – from the long driveway, with the vineyards on your right as you meander down the drive, to the beautifully restored barn, outbuildings and pond. But as we all know, it’s one thing to have a showpiece place, but the real question for visitors to a winery is: can they make wine? The answer is yes, and quite well, I might add, as this delicious Riesling can attest to. A lusci...
