Hillebrand 2007 Showcase Riesling

This is a wine where the young meets the old and the marketing team gets to step in and give it even more flair. In essence, this is not just the winemaker’s wine; the entire Hillebrand marketing machine had a hand in it. First in the vineyard, where they kept yields low (.4 tons to the acre) and used a mix of 5 acres of young vines and 2 acres of 17 year old vines, then winemaker Darryl Brooker took over and made a wine with a nose ripe with peach, nice mineral content and a touch of lemony g...

Kacaba 2006 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay

Chardonnay is a chameleon, it comes in many forms and in many colours, from pale white to dark golden yellow, and it can be manipulated to the taste of the winemaker or the palate of the customer – depending on the winery’s motivation. When discussing wines for the autumn, one would be remiss if they did not include a Chardonnay in their picks – and it’s at this time of year (with the days getting shorter and the nights cooler) that you want more oomph in your Chardonnay instead of less. Smith and Wilson 2007 Riesling

I have never before got such a strong smell and taste from a wine as I did with this one, so I passed it over to a friend of mine and asked if she would like to give me her impressions … Together, we smelled pineapple juice, fresh ripe pineapple juice. On the taste, it was very much the same thing – not your usual peachy, appley smells and tastes; pure pineapple juice. I’m glad to say, this isn’t your same-old-same-old Riesling. Price: $12.00...

Reif Estate 2007 Riesling

Somedays you just want a wine that you can settle back down with, mellow out with, and not worry about how taxing it is going to be on your palate. We’re talking this Reif Riesling. It has plenty of lemon on the nose, with a light apple scent in the background; while in the mouth, there’s Granny Smith apple and lemon tartness that pleases and tickles the palate with it’s flavours and good seam of acidity. What’s more, it isn’t taxing on the pocketbook either. This is definitely a pleasant Ri...

Peller Estates 2007 Private Reserve Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris is a popular grape these days, but there still is confusion between Gris and Grigio. When I tell people it is the same grape done in different styles, or say that it is Italy’s version of Pinot Gris, some still don’t get it. Just to clarify, it is in the same vein as the Syrah / Shiraz … and if you don’t get that then I can’t help you – sorry. The style of “Gris” is fruity and this Peller wine delivers that up with peach, melon and apple on the nose and a hint of apricot that seems...
