Rosehall Run 2005 RRV Chardonnay

I can't praise Rosehall enough; good wine begets praise, consistently good wine begets high praise; and this is the second year in a row that Rosehall has produced an exceptional chardonnay. Many of you know that I am not a chardonnay fan, so you have to know you're doing something special if I praise your chard; and not many have impressed me twice in a row, but believe it or not, “Dan Sulli-van can” (Dan Sullivan, winemaker for Rosehall). This wine was barrel fermented and barrel aged so it ...

Creekside Estates Winery 2006 Sauvignon Blanc

Summer wines should be about putting zing into your mouth, raciness onto the palate and savouring whatever you put on your tongue. Creekside’s new Sauv Blanc does just that, and all at a decent price – which is the fourth tenet of summer wines: they shouldn’t break the bank. This Blanc enters the palate the same way it came through on the nose, with grapefruit, gooseberry and some minerality. It’s zingy, racy and crisp acidity causes the mouth to salivate, yet quenches in the same swallow … ...

Viewpointe Estate Winery 2005 “Ideal Pointe” Barrel Fermented Chardonnay

Viewpointe’s price structure has most wines below $20, but then there are the 4 “pointe” wines which are their reserve wines and range in price between $20 and $33. This barrel fermented Chard spends 6 months on the lees and is showing beautifully right now. A buttery nose of vanilla and oak is followed on the palate with pineapple, vanilla, papaya, fresh tree fruit, like apples and pears, with good length, buttery-oak and smooth-vanilla finish … ideal indeed....

Pillitteri Estates Winery 2006 Sur Lie Chardonnay

A few weeks ago, Pillitteri released the first batch of wines made exclusively by new winemaker Marc Bradshaw, who at one point was assistant to former winemaker Sue-Ann Staff. Marc’s solo creations are pretty impressive. This Sur Lie Chardonnay has very little by way of the nose, but is refreshing and tasty once you get it past the lips. Good buttery-vanilla flavours meld together with tropical fruitiness … quite enchanting for your next outdoor get together....

Wayne Gretzky 2006 Unoaked Chardonnay

Famous people making wine have come to Niagara with a vengeance … first it was Creekside with their Mike Weir label, then came Coyote’s Run with Bob Izumi wines; Dan Aykroyd picked up the baton a few months ago with Diamond Estates at the helm and now Creekside gets into bed with another sports superstar, no. 99 himself: Wayne Gretzky. Instead of wondering who’s next, let’s look at what Gretzky has brought to the bottle. The nose is tropical fruit in nature with pineapple and apple notes bein...
