Sprucewood Shores 2007 Rosé

Odd combinations usually produce some of the most interesting wines. Who would have even thought that adding Viognier to Shiraz would cause such a stir, or blending Gamay and Pinot Noir would result in such a palate pleaser. Well here’s another interesting blend that works remarkably well: Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir. Wineries in the Lake Erie North Shore have really embraced this grape (Cabernet Franc), as all Ontario wineries should, and have come up with some exceedingly good wines usin...

Peller Estates 2007 Private Reserve Rosé

The popularity of rosés this summer was unprecedented, even in the days when white Zinfandel was a popular drink, they never saw the upswing that rosé is seeing today. Winemakers all over the world are taking Rosé very seriously. I was at a tasting where a French rosé from Provence was both ageable and priced for a whopping $100 – now that’s taking this wine seriously. Peller takes their rosé seriously too, but they still know how to have a little fun. Winemaker Lawrence Buhler made this one...

Pelee Island 2007 Chambourcin Rosé

Not your usual rosé type wine. First, it starts with some oddball grapes, Chambourcin and Geisenheim – from there, it develops a fresh raspberry nose and other red berry aromas. On the palate, it’s strawberry and raspberry, which starts off sweet but dissipates quickly to a tart cran-raspberry finish. Perfect for the patio and a hot summer day. Price: $10.95...

Erie Shore Vineyard 2007 Summer Sun

Harvey and Alma Hollingshead are not just convinced that Cabernet Franc is Ontario’s grape – but that it is their bread and butter grape. Erie Shore makes at least 3 different kinds of Cab Franc a year: a regular, a reserve and a rosé. Their Summer Sun is made from 100% Cabernet Franc. Lots of red berry, especially strawberry greet the nose, with a cranberry, citrus and light strawberry palate. What’s more, this stuff can age, at least two or three years, I’m still testing on past vintages ...

Stratus Wines 2006 Wildass Rosé

Most great wineries of the world have a second label where they put those grapes that didn’t make it through the barrel selection process. “Wildass” is Stratus’ way of taking that to a whole new level – no “proper” winery would have a name that far off-base from their primary label; but then that’s the kind of fun they like to have at Stratus (plus if you have ever heard winemaker JL Groux say the word “wildass” you’d get a kick out of it – no pun intended). This rosé, despite it’s bizarro nam...
