Vineland Estates Winery 2006 Pinot Meunier Rosé

A while back, I mentioned that only one winery was making a straight Pinot Meunier wine, and that was made as a dry rosé. Well it has come to pass that Brian Schmidt (winemaker for Vineland) answered the call for another straight Meunier – again as a rosé – and this time with just a dollop of sweetness (one) and a splash of something extra (Gamay Noir -10%). A nice pink wine for the summer or dog days of autumn. The nose is reminiscent of cherries, rhubarb and cranberries … while in the mouth...

Reif Estate 2006 Gamay Rosé

Most people, when they see pink wine, immediately think sweet … if you’re one of those stay away – this one has little to no sweetness what-so-ever; what it does have is plenty of fruitiness: strawberry and raspberry (nose and taste) with crisp acidity and some tartness in the taste. Chilled properly this is quite the refresher....

Niagara College Teaching Winery 2005 College Rosé

“They” say its dry but there is so much about this wine that screams “it should be sweet” … let’s start with the heavily perfumed nose that gives way to lush, plush, plump strawberry aromas – like you could bite into it and feel the juices running down your chin. Then it’s open the lips and pass the gums look out palate here it comes. Forget the strawberries now, it’s raspberries and bubble gum … do I chew it or swallow it? No matter how many times you smell and taste it, you get the same out...

Cattail Creek Estate Winery 2006 Serendipity Rosé

Some things are just meant to be: chocolate and peanut butter, caramel and apple pie, Riesling and Merlot. While the last things aren’t classic pairings let me tell you that when blended together by Cattail’s winemaker – they sure do come out tasty. This rosé (blush) is made by one of the newest Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries, Cattail Creek (which takes its name from the bulrushes that populate the back of the creek running through the property). Blending 83% Riesling with a touch of Merlot (1...

By Chadsey’s Cairn NV County Rosé

There are quite a few really good rosés coming out of Ontario these days; either rosé has a new lease on life or pink is every winemaker’s new favourite colour. Whatever the reason, By Chadsey’s has made an interesting and tasty one here. Rosés are usually made from red grapes that have minimal skin contact with the juice, thus creating its light red, or rosé, colour. For argument’s sake, I’ll consider this wine a blush – a pink wine made primarily from white grapes, in this case Chardonnay (...
