Cox Creek Cellars Spiced Iced Russet

Oh baby, is this ever good! Quite possibly one of the best dessert wines I have ever tried, certainly the best apple wine. Smells of apples and cinnamon emanate from the glass, and the taste does not disappoint. Those same flavours appear on the tongue with caramel and brown sugar … I’d like to call it “baked apples in a glass”, but there’s so much more. How’d they do it? The wine is blended with a variety of spices (that remain a secret known only to the winemaker and his wife – both owner...

Moon Shadow Strawberry Shortcake

Tastes like strawberries with a hint of sweetness … no better yet, remember the wonderful strawberry flavoured milk that was the by-product of eating that children’s cereal Frankenberry (later on known as strawberry Quik) – now it’s yours to have in the glass, with alcohol. Smooth and creamy in the mouth, but not as thick as a glass of strawberry-milk. A delicious after dinner drink … and frightfully good. I’m now waiting for their Boo-Berry knock-off....

Moon Shadow Maple Sugar

The taste of maple sugar in liquid form, without the fear of teeth-rotting sugar granules stuck between your teeth, or the sickening-sweetness that usually accompanies too much maple sugar. The wine passes through the mouth quickly with a short, yet luscious, finish. In the mouth, the wine is thick and rich, while the finish is pure maple sugar; and it’s dentist ...

Harvest Estates 2001 Late Harvest Blue Bottle Chardonnay

I have heard many terms used to describe a sweet wine; my favourite is “a sticky” (used mainly for Port). I always thought it was because if you spilled a drop on the counter or table top it would become quite sticky, like honey or jam. Well with this wine you can take that description a step further and call it “a-sticky-lip-licker”. Turns out after each sip I found myself licking my lips repeatedly – being able to get another taste because the taste was always there. Then again, there real...

Cave Spring Cellars 2005 Select Late Harvest Cabernet

You’re going to see quite a few of these little darlings from the 2005 vintage. That’s because in early-December ’05 Ontario had itself some cold temperatures but they were erratic; we dipped to minus-8 (perfect temperature for icewine picking and production) in the early morning of November 24 but jumped quickly back to more seasonal temps within a few hours. Some wineries tried to take advantage of the first good freeze by running out to get a jump on their icewine picking and production. ...
